dunk by Hurt rallied UK and they trailed only 39-36 at the half. Trailing 53-51 with 9:05 left, the 'Cats reeled off 15 unanswered points and held on for the win. Kyle Macy led UK with 12 points. Fellow senior LaVon Williams had 11 points and eight rebounds while the team's other senior, Shidler, hit some key long-range bombs while scoring 11 points. Ray Tolbert and Mike Woodson scored 16 points apiece for the Hoosiers.

*Four days after upsetting second-ranked Notre Dame, UK opened SEC play, losing 81-76 to Florida in Alligator Alley. UK was flat the entire game and after pulling to within four at 59-55, the 'Cats were never able to get closer. Clarence Tillman led Kentucky with 14 points and seven rebounds. Chuck Aleksinas also had 14 points for the UK.
*LSU was able to convert its second-half free throws and UK was unable to pull of another miraculous comeback as the Tigers defeated UK 93-89 in Rupp Arena. This marked the first time an LSU team has won in Lexington. The key to the game was a 16-2 second-half spurt by the Tigers which saw them go from a 60-52 deficit to a 66-62 lead. UK rallied back after trailing by nine to get within one with 18 seconds remaining, before Dewayne Scales made a three-point play on a dunk and a free throw to put the game away. Dwight Anderson led UK with 16, while Kyle Macy and LaVon Williams had 14 each. The loss dropped Kentucky to 0-2 in the SEC.
*Sharpshooting forward Tim Stephens left the UK team due to lack of playing time and will-enroll at Cumberland College. He left
following the Dec. 30 game with Notre Dame.
*UK got back on the winning track with a 90-64 win over Ole Miss at Rupp Arena. The win was UK's first in SEC play. UK led only 65-58 with 5:38 to play, but then outscored the Rebels 25-9 the rest of the way. Six Kentucky players scored in double digits, led by Fred Cowan with 17 points.

*"I am pleased with this opportunity to serve my alma mater and the state," said ex-UK All-American Cliff Hagan as he was named the school's new athletic director, replacing the retiring Harry Lancaster. Hagan had served as assistant athletic director prior to being promoted to the head job.

?Kentucky won the UKIT with a 73-59 win over Navy and a 98-76 win in the final over a good Duke team. Dan Issel scored 40 points in the Navy game, but guard Bob McCowan was the surprise of the tournament, winning MVP honors by hitting over 60 percent of his shots from the field and scoring 41 points in the two games.

*For the first time this year, Kentucky displayed the accuracy and teamwork expected of them as they blasted Idaho 9M9. Bob Burrow led Adoph Rupp's Wildcats with 19 points. Vernon Hatton scored 16, Gerry Calvert had 14. Phil Grawemeyer 13 and Jerry Bird 11.
