CLIFF BERGER Junior Center-Forward Centralia, Illinois
Central figure in an experiment by Coach Adolph Rupp to solve the Wildcats' height deficiency to some degree by moving the Illinois native to center and shifting '66 starter Thad Jaracz to forward. The move did not seem productive, however, and is not likely to come about until the smaller unit is thoroughly tested.
Rupp assures he has confidence in Berger and will insert the blonde, young giant (6-8Vi) often to allow him to gain experience. Chief trouble with the Berger lineup was a sacrifice of team speed. Cliff is expected to move a bit better this season as the result of an off-season removal of a bone spur on his foot.
Operated as the Wildcats' No. 6 man last season, scor-
ing 84 points and hauling in 86 rebounds during 297 minutes of action in 25 games. Turned in his finest relief job in Kentucky's pivotal win over nationally third-ranked Vanderbilt. Academic All-SEC choice with B in Liberal Arts.
Paced '65 frosh with 1 3 rebound average. At best when opposition is toughest. Berger was widely-sought prospect following sensational career at Centralia Township High. Cliff won All-America as team lost only twice in his final two seasons and was runner-up for the state crown in '64.
In his senior year, Berger netted 796 points and 26.5 average plus 14 rebounds a game. At 6-8Vi, Cliff bids to become the Wildcats' biggest regular pivotman since 6-9 Ned Jennings in 1960-61.

Phone 255-6470 Assistant Coach HARRY LANCASTER
Recognized as one of the top assistant coaches in the profession, Harry Lancaster has served in the capacity of chief aide to Baron Adolph Rupp since 1946. Among his various duties, the Paris (Ky.) native spends much time scouting future opponents of the Wildcats, recruiting some of the best schoolboy talent in the nation and coaching with much success the UK freshman cage team. Lancaster in the past 16 seasons has guided the Kittens to a record of 175 wins and only 46 losses. Harry is a graduate of Georgetown (Ky.) College, where he was an all-around sports standout in early thirties. An All-Conference halfback in football three straight years, his grid career almost overshadowed his play on the basketball court. Even though he considered himself a better gridder than basketeer, he starred in basketball with an equal number of All-Conference selections and wisely chose to stick with the cage sport as a career. Lancaster spent nine years as a high school principal and coach before coming to UK in 1942 as a physical education instructor.
Assistant Coach JOE HALL
Former Kentucky basketeer Joe Hall of Cynthiana, who proved himself a successful coach for nine years, joined the cage staff of Adolph Rupp last season. The new Wildcat aide transferred from Central Missouri State College, where he was head coach during the 1964-65 season and posted a 19-6 record enroute to guiding his team to the school's first NIAA Conference championship since 1951. A guard on Coach Rupp's 1949 UK team, Hall entered coaching upon his graduation in 1955. He spent three years at Shephardsville High, twice achieving conference "Coach of the Year" honors, and then moved into collegiate ranks at Regis College. After one season as freshman coach, Joe was elevated to head coach and for five years posted successful records. The 37-year-old Kentuckian also coached the Capital Federal Denver team in the AAU Tournament and later was honored by selection as head coach of the AAU Stripes in the Olympic Trials. Hall is given much credit by Coach Rupp for his success in recruiting this season's outstanding freshman team.
