_ II ——ANALYSES OF FAR.MERS’ AND INSPECTORS’
2 SAMPLES.
r . The law regulating the sale of commercial fertilizers
V, _ I in this State provides (Sec. 7) that: "Any agricnlturist, a
Q i purchaser of any commercial fertilizer in this State, may
N1, , g take a sample of the same, under the rules and regula- ·
° L 1 tions of the Director of the said Experiment Station, and
1 t forward the same to the Experiment Station for analysis,
yy I which analysis shall be made free of charge." In the
I l same section the Director is authorized, " In person or by
·_ deputy, to take samples for analysis from any lot or pack-
, V age of any commercial fertilizer which may be in the
Q ,, I possession of airy dealer in this State." Under these
FM _;' provisions, a number of samples have been analyzed from
I X I time to time and the results of these analyses are pub-
‘ lished in the following pages.
An examination of the table of analyses will show
it that most of the fertilizers sampled by farmers or by the
éy Inspector are fairly represented by the samples sent to
L *—,l_ the Station by the manufactiirers. Some are better than
,' ..~»` ‘ the otlicial samples, while a few fall below them——not,
l however, to such an extent as to show any intention of
fraud or gross carelessness on the manufacturers’ part.
Altogether the results are far more satisfactory than those
QQ ` of last year.
, ` Here follows, first, a brief description of each sample;
* and, second, the analyses in tabular form. For conven-
_ ience of reference, the "station number" of each sample
, is given, and all brands of the same manufacturer are
arranged together. The names of the manufacturers are
placed in alphabetical order in the description of the
samples, and following each li11Zl1ll1f2lCllL1I'€I7S name are the _
, brands of his make that were analyzed.
` It is necessary to compare the analysis of each sain-
ple with the "ofIicial analysis" on the tags attached to the

· sacks from which the sample was taken, because it is not
possible for manufacturers to make the same fertilizer ·
perfectly uniform from year to year, and any fertilizer is {
therefore liable to vary somewhat in composition; also, t
l because the values assigned to the "essential ingredients" T
L in calculating the "estimatecl value per ton" are subject A l
’ to change from timeto time This is the reason wh a

,0,, Explanations in Regard to the Table. T
In the following table we have given in the iirst T
Mk column the name of the brand; next, where the sample
UO was taken; then the "station nnmber," and, lastly, the
analysis and valuation. The same order is preserved in
·‘““· the table as in the description of the samples, hence it is
not necessary to repeat the name of the manufacturer. ,_
In the case of each brand, the official analysis 1S first .
Q_ given in ba/n' faced g¢e, for comparison. This oiiicial
E39- analysis is the same as the analysis that was on the tag V
`}` attached to the sack from which the sample was taken.
