Kentucky defeated LSU for the first time since 1961, Florida for the first time since 1956, and IU for the first time since 1919.
Quarterback Fanuzzi rushed for 909 yards in 179 carries for a 5.1 average. He led all other UK scorers with 11 TDs. Operating the run-oriented veer, he completed 32 of 83 passes for 438 yards and 4 TDs. He threw five interceptions.
Fanuzzi was voted the team's Most Valuable Player.
Rick Nuzum, a 22-year-old senior, was named to the first team of Newspaper Enterprise Association's Ail-American Team. He was the first UK player to be so awarded since 1965. The 6'4" center played in two post season all-star games. He participated in the East-West game and the Hula Bowl. He was also named the Outstanding Senior Player.
Nuzum was drafted in the fifth round by the Los Angelos Rams.
Elmore Stephens, a blocking tight end with a knack for turning short passes into big gainers, was named to the first team of the Time Magazine squad. The 6'4" senior was the first draft choice of the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round.
Sophomore Warren Bryant was named to the Football News Ail-American Sophomore Team. He was also named to the All-SEC first team offense, one of only two sophomores so honored.
Defensive Captain Tom Ehlers led the team with 91 solo tackles and 83 assists. The 6'1", 218 lb. senior was picked by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 13th round.
Sonny Collins finished with 177 carries for 970 yards, an average of 5.5, even though he missed the last nine quarters of the season. He shared the Wildcat of the Year Award with Tom Ranieri and was the only repeater on the AP's All-SEC first offensive unit.
Mike Emmanuel, a junior linebacker, was awarded the Kiwanis Club's 110 Percent Award. He was also named the Outstanding Player of the Game by ABC-TV for his performance in the Vanderbilt game.
Jim Kovach received the Freshman Leadership Award, and defensive end Roger Peterman received the K-Men's Award for
