Students hired to grade papers
Student graders, who were hired to grade homework and quiz papers, were employed by several University colleges.
The rate of pay and the number of hours worked varied with each college. The business department paid $1.65 per hour letting the student work as many hours as possible.
The math department paid $200 per semester for working an eight hour week, and the accounting department paid $1.62 per hour but the students could work only 50 hours per semester.
The basis for selection of student graders also varied between each department. Students grading for the Business department were chosen on the recommendation of a teacher. To grade for the Math department a student had to have at least four semesters of calculus, while graders for the Accounting department must have had made a B or better in the course for which he was grading.
Since it was necessary for the student to have had the course before becoming a grader, most graders did not feel that they were learning in the process.
Student graders were considered necessary employees by the departments.
