The character and flavor of Lexington is preserved by having areas where buildings of the early days are used and lived in.
HARRODSBURG
What is the oldest permanent English settlement west of the Alleghenies? Why Old Fort Harrod in Harrodsburg.
Colonel James Harrod and his settlers built the fort in 1774. The settlers had formed a settlement, Harrodstown, but were routed by indian attacks and were forced to spend months away from their settlement.
Shortly following their return, they were attacked again and their homes were burned to the ground. After this second attack, they built Fort Harrod.
This fort is now a state park which offers tours of the area, an outdoor drama, "The Legend Of Daniel Boone," and memorials to Kentucky's heritage. HENRY CLAY'S HOME ASHLAND Ashland, the beloved estate of Henry Clay, famous statesman, is the sight at which four presidents have been entertained.
The house is in a park-like setting and is filled with many interesting furnishings belonging to four generations of the Clay family.
Clay was one of the most influential political leaders in the United States in the decades before the Civil War. In the 1870's he moved to Kentucky and became a successful lawyer.
He had served in Congress, held the position of Secretary of State, and served the Senate several times.
Ashland is located about one and a half miles from downtown Lexington on East Main Street. HUNT-MORGAN HOUSE Known as Hopemont, the Hunt-Morgan House has a long and interesting historical background. The house was built by John Wesley Hunt, Kentucky's first millionaire.
It was the last home of Hunt's grandson, General Morgan'Hunt, known as "The Thunderbolt of the Confederacy" and leader of the famous Morgan Raiders.
It was also the birthplace of Dr. Thomas Morgan, Kentucky's only Nobel Prize winner. A world renown geneticist, Dr. Morgan won the prize in 1933.
The Hunt-Morgan house is located in historic area of Grantz Park on Short Street. 7f
