FIVE YEARS AGO
"Kentucky reeled off seven straight points down the stretch to break open a tie ball game and defeat visiting Georgia 56-49. Georgia had a chance to lead for the first time when the score was tied 45-45 but missed a shot with five minutes to go and UK's Fred Cowan followed a missed UK shot with a dunk. After Georgia held the ball for a long time, which they did all night, UK finally rebounded an errant shot and Cowan hit again. Sam Bowie then blocked a Georgia shot and Cowan converted a three-point play at the other end. Georgia slowed the pace all night as Coach Hugh Durham said he didn't have the horses to run with the Cats. Cowan and Bowie each scored 18 for the Cats. Georgia played without injured star Dominique Wilkins.
"Kentucky's record dropped to 17-4 and they lost first place,in the SEC race as visiting LSU outplayed the Cats enroute to a 65-60 win. LSU jumped out to a ten-point lead and the Tigers never let UK get closer than three points by controlling the game with a delay tactic which resulted in several easy baskets and free throws. LSU outshot and outrebounded the Cats. The Tigers led 33-23 at the half. DeWayne Scales scored 21 points for LSU and Ethan Martin added 15 while Howard Carter scored 14. Fred Cowan led UK with 17 points while Jay Shidler pitched in ten.
*The Kentucky Wildcats turned in perhaps their best road showing of the year with an 89-67 win at Mississippi State. The Cats took the lead midway in the first half and never looked back. UK continued their torrid shooting of late, hitting 39 of 63 shots for 61.9
percent. Kyle Macy led UK with 20 points while Fred Cowan scored 17 points. Jeff Malone scored 27 points for Mississippi State.
*Six-foot-six guard Kris Jenner of Mascoutah, Illinois announced he will play basketball at Kentucky next year. Jenner is also a highly-touted prep quarterback.

*Mark Soderburg, a 6-8 sophomore reserve center, has quit the UK basketball team and returned home to Huntington Beach, Calif. Soderburg
has scored 16 points and played Just 31 minutes in 11 games behind Ail-American center Dan Issel. He averaged 15.9 points last year on the freshman team.
*'Tt's not the end of the world," Adolph Rupp said as the number two-ranked team was handed their first loss of the year, an 89-81 drubbing to Vandy at Nashville. With Dan Issel below par with a bruised heel and Larry Steele and Mike Pratt in foul trouble, UK trailed the Commodores (9-7) most of the way. Issel finished with 26 points and Pratt 20. Sophomore Tommy Arnholt paced Vandy with 28 and Perry Wallace had 20.
*Sub Terry Mills hit a jump shot with 11 seconds left to lift UK to an 84-83 win over Auburn. The Tigers' Henry Harris fell short on a last second shot, enabling UK to tie Georgia for the SEC lead. Dan Issel paced UK with 28 points while John Mengelt led Auburn with 41.
*6-5 forward Larry Steele fell on his right hand in practice and suffered a possible fracture, placing him out of action indefinitely.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
*Over 2,000 fans jammed packed into Georgia Tech's gymnasium saw David slew Goliath again as Tech upset Kentucky for the second time this season, this one by a 65-59 scored. UK lost the game at the foul line, where they hit five of 15 compared to Tech's 25 of 34. Tech became the first team since 1927 to down UK twice in one season. It was the number one ranked Wildcats' second loss of the year, while Tech is 6-10. Joe Helms scored 24 for Tech and Bobby Kimmel of Louisville 20.
