Alabama's Smith To UK
Tom Smith, a 6-1, 180-pound defensive back from Mobile, Alabama, who says his greatest football thrill comes from hitting people, fell in love with the University of Kentucky's wide-tackle six defense in the Hall of Fame Bowl and says he wants to play that defense for the next four years.
Those were the reasons why Smith made a verbal committment to the Kentucky coaching staff after making an official visit to UK last week.
"I felt like UK has got a good, growing program," Smith told The Cats' Pause last week, "they have good academics, they care about the players off the field and the people are
real nice. They've got everything I want from a school."
Smith, whose Murphy High went 9-2 this past season while winning the regional title, has earlier visited Memphis State. He cancelled visits to Auburn, Ole Miss and Tulane after making his decision to attend UK. Nichols State and SE Louisiana also recruited him.
Smith said he was particularly excited about the running of George Adams and Mark Higgs. "Higgs being a freshman really excited me," said Smith.
He is the first out-of-state prepster to verbally commit to UK.
