  • Identifier: MS LAT KY VIII
  • Summary: Deluxe Book of Hours, owned by Filippo-Maria de' Visconti, with illuminated borders and initials.
  • Origin: circa 1412-1447, Milan, Lombardy, Italy
  • Decoration: Decorated throughout with initials illuminated with red work around blue letters, or purple scroll work around gold letters. Three-line illuminated initials with modest foliation in border, five-line K for beginning of Litany (fol. 33v). Two seven-line inhabited initials with St. Augustine and David. Penwork marginal faces from ascenders and descenders appearing on fol. 82v, continuing through end of work.
  • Provenance: Notably owned by Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan and Count of Pavia (1412-1447). Location unknown until posession by Philip Sang who donated it to the Library on August 8, 1961. [Further potential provenance marks under book plate and in light pencil on Flyleaf 1.]
  • Notes: Missing ffol. between 75 and 76. fol. 42v: prayer for "michi servo tuo duci mediolani" [me, your servant, the duke of Milan]. Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts provides verified provenance for another of Visconti's books (Itinerario di la Gram Militia) showing a gap between the Duke's death in 1447 and the reemergence of this book in the collection of Jean-Baptiste Joseph Barrios (1785-1855).
