Biography/History

Bishop, Educator. Born in Rhode Island, Smith received a degree from Brown University in 1816. After his ordination into the priesthood of the Protestant Episcopal Church, he served in parishes in Massachusetts, Virginia, Vermont, and Pennsylvania before he moved to Lexington, Ky. in 1830 to assume the pastorate of Christ Church. Two years later, he was consecrated Bishop of Kentucky. After 1837, he gave up his parish in order to devote himself to the demands of his diocese. He also became Kentucky's first superintendent of public instruction, opened a girl's school in Louisville, and tried to raise funds for the Theological Seminary in his diocese. In 1868, he became Presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States and moved to New York in order to fulfill his duties.

Scope and Content
