PREFACE

The publication herewith presented, an index to the probate cases
filed in Franklin County, Texas, is No. 80 of the Texas series of coun-
ties. The publication is intended to meet the requirements of day-to~
day usage by the officials of the county, attorneys, businessmen, and
other citizens who have occasion to consult probate case records for the
proper conduct of their affairs. The publication may be used by histom
rians and genealogists to obtain references to unpublished source
material.

The names of the deceased persons, minors, and other principals are
arranged alphabetically, with reference to filing date of the case and
,the case number. Differentiation between probate cases assigned dupli-
cate numbers is accomplished by the addition of a letter following the
case number. The prefix "L" is used to denote lunacy cases. Case num-
bers preceded by "C" were assigned to previously unnumbered cases. The

following numbers in series 1 to 1086 were not used as case numbers:
_ 48, 58, 59, 70, 73, 235, 264, 271, 429-443, 497, 639, 691, 694.

In Franklin County all probate records are in the custody of the
county clerk. Case papers are filed in numerical sequence in plainly
marked steel file drawers in the clerk's office on the first floor of
the courthouse.

Since the transfer of territory from one county to another has af-
fected probate jurisdiction and has determined the county in which the
probate case should be filed, a map and table of territorial changes are
included herein. Notations concerning present location and availability
of records pertinent to Franklin County follow:

Nacogdoohes County, Nacogdoches, all records extant

Red River County, Clarksville, all records extant

Titus County, Mount Pleasant, records destroyed by fire, 1895
