Government service is offering an ever widening Held of opportimity for
irch in the college trained man and woman. The last years have seen a tremendous
increase in the number of civil employees. The complexity of our public prob-
lems and the rising demand for an eiHcient public service have led to the de-
mand for people qualified and trained for government positions.
Students interested in entering the Federal Civil Service through the usual
_ channel of the ]unior Professional Assistant {ind a variety of types of specialized
QS' preparation acceptable. For general administrative work a course in public
1 administration is essential. One major part of the ]unior Professional Assistant
2 examination, however, is based on general training and knowledge. For this
{ general part of the junior Professional Assistant examination, a broad back-
Q ground in political science and the related fields of social sciences will be help-
- ful. For those desiring to enter specialized fields of the public service in federal,
i state, or local government, combinations of courses across departmental lines
.S_ can be arranged to supply the technical training desired.
PSYCHOLOGY
The Department’s undergraduate program includes courses in general,
social, experimental, animal, abnormal, and child psychology, in psychological
l' testing, and in the applications of psychology to business and industry.
The graduate program includes work leading to the master’s degree and
the Ph.D. degree in the fields of general, clinical, or counseling psychology.
In cooperation with the Veterans Administration, the Department offers a four-
year course of training in clinical psychology leading to the Ph.D. degree.
Students in this program alternate between full time academic assignments
. and assignments to intemship training in a Veterans Hospital. Veterans Ad-
ministration Technical Bulletin 10A-146 describes this training program. Vari-
ous other means of securing practical training in clinical psychology are af-
forded by other hospitals and clinics in the locality.
The Department operates a speech and hearing clinic. Diagnosis and cor-
rective therapy is provided for children and adults with speech and hearing _
ment disorders, and training is offered in the techniques of speech correction and
