Finance Conmmittee Report
                                                 January 16, 1973

      Mem-ibers. Board of Trustees:

                    ROOM AND BOARD RATrES 1973-74

I. Adjustment of Room and Board Rates--Undergraduate Residence Halls--
      Regular Semester

Recommendation: That the semester room and board rates be adjusted to
$587.00 for the three meal plan, to $518.00 for the two meal plan of
breakfast and dinner, and to $538.00 for the choice of two meals plan
effective the Fall Semester, 1973.

Background: The present room and board rate ($537.00 for the three meal
plan, $473.00 for the breakfast and dinner plan, and $501.00 for the choice
of two meals plan) is insufficient to meet the higher operating costs of
the Housing and Dining System. The proposed adjustment results primarily
from increased labor and food costs. These rates cover debt service, all
operating costs, funds for replacement of furniture and equipment, and $9.00
per semester for staffing the visitation hours and three study lounges in
the residence halls as recommended by the Commission on University Housing
Policies.

II. Adjustment of Room Rates--Undergraduate Residence Halls--Summer
      School

Recommendation: That the Summer School room rates be adjusted to $145.00
for double occupancy and $185.00 for single occupancy effective the 1973
summer session.

Background: The present room rate is $135.00 for double occupancy and
$170.00 for single occupancy. The summer rate is based on the weekly rate
for regular semester, with the single rate being 125% of the double occupancy
rate. The calculation is based upon a 16 week semester and an eight week
summer session.

III. Adjustment of Room Rates--Professional Building

Recommendation: That the semester single room rates for students residing
in the professional building be adjusted to $587.00 for the Fall Semester,
1973, and that the double occupancy room rates be adjusted to $293.50.

Background: The increase in the present room rate ($537.00 for single
occupancy and $268.50 for double occupancy) is the same as the new rate
that will be charged for undergraduate room only.
