into shocks a day or two after raking. In fair weather soybeans
cut after the leaves have fallen may usually be stacked in
from three to five days or threshed from the field in from
seven to ten daysf Stacking is advisable because it lessens the
, chances of loss due to unfavorable weather and gives more
time for seeding small grains following the beans. Stacks l
should be topped with grass and if this is carefully done, the
beans can be left in the stack as long as desired without danger `
of loss. As a matter of fact, soybeans thresh more easily after
standing in the stack for several weeks.
THRESHING SOYBEANS.
t The ordinary grain separator is very satisfactory for thresh- ‘
ing soybeans, but to avoid cracking the seed the cylinder must
be run at a much lower speed than in threshing wheat or other
y small grains, and fewer concave teeth should be used. In re- ’
V dueing cylinder speed there must be no reduction in the speed l
i of the other parts of the separator. It is not practical to pro- _
; vide various cylinder speeds and one-half that used in threshing
; small grains will more nearly meet all demands than any other
; U speed that can be selected. This modification can be made
L on separators with the old style straw carriers by doubling
5 the size of both cylinder pulleys. For separators with wind
V stackers, an attaclnnent known as a "jack," which bolts to the
S frame of the separator, is used. This attachment can now be
l obtained for most separators at a moderate cost. Only one
S concave should be used and in threshing very dry soybeans or
g those with large seeds it is usually necessary to remove some
e of the teeth. In fact it is sometimes necessary, in order to pre-
e vent cracking the seed, to use blank eoncaves. Special bean
h, eoneavcs with thin teeth, or thin teeth to substitute for the
I ordinary teeth in the concave, can be obtained and are very
{ _ desirable in threshing soybeans.
