A Comparison of the Total Calcium Content of Cultivated.
and Virgin Soils. The comparison of cultivated and virgin
soils shows that the cultivated soil contains less total calcium
in nearly every instance than the corresponding virgin soil.
The most productive soils usually contain the most total cal-
. cium. A few of the soils analyzed contained less than 1000
pounds of total calcium in the acre-6 inches, the lowest being
I 430 pounds, and it seems reasonable to infer that such are
deficient in plant—food calcium, or would become so very soon
by cropping. The results of this investigation have been pub-
_ lished in a Station bulletin entitled "A comparison of the cal-
` eium content ot some virgin and cultivated soils of Kentucky
i by an improved method for the estimation of this element." A
paper has also been prepared on the "Edect of certain calcium
i compounds and other substances on the yield and calcium con-
tent ot some crops." The evidence of the pot experiments de-
¥ scribed in the second paper, and of the analyses made in con-
» neetion with them, goes far toward proof that certain of the
~ soils experimented upon are not capable of supplying enough
» plant-food calcium for good crops. ‘
· Soil Experiment Field Work. Soil experiment iields are
operated on eight separate soil areas in the state and are locat-
ed as follows:
a. Lexington, Fayette County, representing the central _
_ bluegrass area.
