been tested further on diseased soil and have again shown a I
high degree of resistance. These strains have been tested g
rather extensively in the burley section during the past season ;
and from reports received they have proved 1nore desirable I
than the varieties commonly grown. They were earlier, more 1
uniform in growth and type and where grown on diseased soil <
pr·oved resistant to root-rot. The quality in practically all
cases reported was as good as or better than that of the local
1 variety with which it was tested. Two new selections of Vi-
E mont Kelley white burley were tested on diseased soil and 1
l found to be practically immune.
  Standard Grades for Tobacco. In cooperation with the
Bureau of Markets and Crop Estimates, United States Depart- i
ment of Agriculture, an investigation has been entered upon '
relating to standard grades for tobacco. Approximately 200 {
interviews and conferences have been had with representatives
of I112l.]111f21C’l111'C1“S, dealers, warehousemen and growers regard- l
ing tobacco grades. About 45 markets in the burley district
and the dark tobacco district have been visited in order to gain
i , information in this study. During the last two months of the
year samples of tobacco have been collected and these samples
are being used as the basis for study of the factors involved,
A their relative importance, how they may be measured and de-
scribed. \Vhcn the investigation is sufficiently well advanced,
2 it is contemplated that tentative grades will be made up for
= the purpose of formulating reconnnendations for definite
  standard grades which may be adopted by the Federal Govern-
A ment.
i Cost of Tobacco Production. This study is now in its
