Collection Overview

Biography / History
Leo M. Chamberlain was born in 1896 and was a native of Chalmers, Indiana. Teaching in elementary schools in Indiana from 1915-1918, Dr. Chamberlain interrupted his career in education to serve in the US Army in World War I. Dr. Chamberlain graduated from Indiana University, receiving an AB degree, 1926, a master's degree, 1927, and the doctorate of philosophy in 1931. While at studying at Indiana University, he served as a part-time research assistant. He started faculty work at the University of Kentucky in 1929, and spent a year as an Assistant Professor of Education before becoming Director of the University of Kentucky Bureau of School Services. In 1937, he was appointed the University Registrar. From 1942-1946, he also served as the Dean of the University. He served in 1946 simultaneously as the Vice President of the University. He was the author of "Teacher and School Organization" and other educational publications. Dr. Chamberlain represented the University on the Kentucky Education Commission, 1933, and the Southern Association Commission, 1942-1962. Chamberlain retired in 1965 and received an honorary degree from the University in 1966. Leo Chamberlain died June 26, 1968, an assistant professor emeritus and professor emeritus.

The Leo M. Chamberlain papers include administrative records from the various offices held by Chamberlain. Some of his positions at the University included: professor in the College of Education, University Registrar, Dean of the College of Education, and Vice President of the University. Box 1 contains materials relating to Maurice F. Seay, who was Dean and Registrar after Chamberlain. The records also include administrative materials, documentation on the freshmen week committee, Committee for Kentucky, health service, music, veterans affairs, salary studies, and student government. The collection also contains materials related to the Army Specialized Training Program and the American Council on Education.
