1. HYGIENE AND PUBLIC HEALTH
:3   The functions of the department are threefold; namely, .
. y_ .- medical service to the students, teaching, and research. In the
ml? I ' performance of each of these functions primary emphasis is placed
ies § upon the prevention of disease and the promotion of health.
lm i The medical service consists of complete physical examina-
,€_ r tions of all entering students, the maintenance of a Student Health
Service on the campus, and calls by physicians of the staff to
. boarding and rooming students who are ill in their rooms.
The department offers courses in health open to students in
· A the various colleges of the University. A full year of work is of-
gj . K fered to graduate nurses in preparation for public health nursing.
; Also, courses leading to the degree of Master of Science in Public
‘ Health are offered especially for the preparation of medical officers
of health.
J OURNALISM
The department has a library containing the latest works on
journalism, leading daily and weekly newspapers, periodicals, and
other publications. It is supplied with standard equipment to
- print and to publish a modern community newspaper and to pro-
` vide high-grade commercial job printing for the campus. In the
. equipment is a type laboratory for instruction in typography,
  make-up, and the mechanics of publishing and advertising.
T Correlated with the work of this department are a committee
i· on student publications, a campus bulletin, The Kentucky Kernel
i" (student newspaper), The Kentuckian (student yearbook), The
i Kentucky Press (a monthly publication for the editors of the state
press) and The KHSPA News (a publication for high school
V editors.) These and other journalistic activities are used in labora-
tory work. Material written in the advanced classes is submitted
for publication in local, state, and national newspapers and in
‘“ periodicals.
The Degree of A. B. In Journalism
The curriculum leading to the degree of A. B. in Journalism is
_ a prescribed course having as its aim a liberal education and the
i training of men and women for successful careers in the journal-
I · istic profession.
