Historical note The Gridiron Club was founded in 1885 by a group of Washington, D.C. journalists, such as Benjamin Perley Poore, the club's first president. One of the most prominent organizations for journalists, the Gridiron Club admits members solely through invitation. Traditionally the club only admitted newspaper journalists but in recent years it has included broadcast journalists as well.
