WHY BLUE RIDGE AND DOES IT MEAN ANYTHING

TO BE A BLUE

RIDGER?

,No one who has over attended a conference at Bluo Ridge has any
doubt as to what the ten days spent there mean. In short it means ono of the
greatest ten days spent anywhere, in one's life. There, ono meets with the
picked students of the Universities and Colleges of this great south land
of ours, and with the help of the real leaders who are there every years, try
to solve tho problems that face us in our daily lifo and on our campus.
There are sovoral reasons why Bluo Ridge.
First. Bluo Ridge is tho most delightful spot I know of in tho North
Carolina mountains. It leans back against the broad brcst of High Top and
looks across tho lovely Swanannoa valley straight to tho great domes of
Craggy, Blackstono Knob, and Greybeard, behind which old Mitchell hides
his mammoth head and back. From so wide a prospect of
beauty one may pass in one minute into tho cool deep colitudo of tho mountain forest.
Second.
For the moral and spiritual lifo, Bluo Ridge is a veritable
fountain of inspiration and renewal. Ono can hardly speak of one's sober
judgment without the appearance of exaggeration.
And to bo a Bluo Ridger means, among tho many things, tho following:
It means memories and friends. It means boys and girls of christian idealism. It means folks who aro what they ought to bo, or nearly so. It means
faith in others and in self. It means tho high spot so far In spiritual exand
perience. It means
It means questions
answered and problems solved, lives changed and dedicated. It means a
now personal label, "I am a Bluo Rldgor."
Bluo Ridge means all theso things and even more. It means things
for which wo find no expression in tho words of language. No one can
ever know what it means to be a Blue Ridger by hearing others tell of it.
That knowledge com esonly thru the experience of going there. Do not bo
contented with one's story of Bluo Ridge, for no ono has over been ablo
to tell of tho fullness that is found these. It will pay you many times in
return to spend a few days on the top of tho Blue Ridge mountains, and to
enjoy the many wonderful things God has seen fit to place at our disposal.
After you have been there you will joint that great chorus, who is continually Baying, "My one regret is that it is not more than ten days. Tho
time has been too short."
I think the best thing of all about Blue Ridgo is tho fact that it gives
ub problems to solve and things that wo bavo to put into practice. It gives
one a lot of new visions, but tho one word that stands out above all others

is "SERVICE."

THE LURE OF BLUE RIDGE
When examinations are imminent and reviews are absolutely necessary,
have you ever felt a perverse desiro tugging at your rebellious spirit and
urging you to sieze tho first outgoing train for parts unknown? Or, some
early dawn, when you lay awako dreading a long expected quiz, has tho
shrill whistle from a distant locomotive speeding southward ever called
you to arise and follow?
The month of June, especially the one that is approaching now, is nn
excellent time to obey that impulse and Biezo tho over elusive moment that
always stretches just ahead, No matter how fatigued your bram cells may
.be nor how weary your feelings aro, there Is ono place for which you will bo
repaid in going. That place is Blue Ridge.
The magestlc structure in miniature set against u background of rolling
mountains and shifting clouds that is one's first impression of Bluo Ridge
as he sees it across what seems a short distance of a mile or so and proves
to be at least three times that far. But the last turn in tho winding drive
way reveals tho place in ull its beauty Robert E. Leo Hall with its tall,
white columns and spacious piazza, a wide swimming pool with the roflec
tion of North Carolina skies in its clear, cool depths, tho outlying buildings
with their attractive exteriors all these are charmingly reminiscent of tho
days in Dixie.
old South and pre-wa- r
To tho people from our University there is one locale of especial in
terest. Across tho first bridge aro many little houses half hidden by tho
thick foliage on tho mountainside. Tho second ono of theso is Kentucky
Cottage where lifelong friendships havo beon begun and common interests
huve become inspirations.
Blue Ridgo loaves many photographic Impressions which cannot bo ob
literated by tiino Mt. Mitchell bight above tho clouds whore tho spectator
looks down and sees only groy mist below; Chimney Rock whore ho gazes
at a sheer drop of G.Cll foot: Spanish Castlo with Its quaint uir of feudal
time in old Spain. But In tho last analysis theso natural wonders do not
constitute tho luro of Bluo Ridgo.
To one sitting beneuth tho shadow of Loo Hall and wutclilng tho aureate
und purple clouds that cluster about tho Seven Sisters, comes tho familiar
thought: "What does lifo mean? After ull, what Is tho uso?" But this tlmo
the oft recurring thought is tinged with a now meaning. It would Boom that
Bluo Ridgo has opened a now vista. Tho question that too ofton provel
futllo in tho valleys senses to bo oven a query on tho heights. Tho poaco
and calm of tho placo havo worked a muglcal chungo. There comes another
niiflHtlnn which bus but ono answer: "For what shall It profit a man, If ho
shall uuln tho wholo world und lose his own soul?"
Ofton you huve promises yourself that soino day you will sit down and
n.w.ir nut thn nianv doubts thut possess you. When will Hint some way no:
"Tlmo goes, wo stay." and ovory year thut pussos will find you more sot
fled, more stolid in your wuys. Why not consldor tho matter seriously und
make up your mind to go to Bluo Ridgo this Bununor und thero find out for
yourself what constitutes tho attraction of tho Lund or tno bKy;
