     Biographical note 
 U.S. Congressman, Noble Jones Gregory was born in Mayfield, Kentucky in 1897. He graduated from Mayfield Business College and went to work in the First national Bank of Mayfield, serving as a bookkeeper, cashier, and trust officer from 1917 to 1936. He was elected secretary-treasurer of the Mayfield Board of Education in 1923 and continued in that post until 1936. He also managed his brother Voris' campaigns for Congress from 1926 to 1936. Voris had succeeded Alben Barkley as First District Congressman when the future Vice-President had won election to the Senate. When Voris died suddenly during a campaign in 1936, Noble was chosen to run in his brother's stead. Noble was elected, serving the district until 1958. During his tenure in the House, Noble served on the committees for Post Offices and Post Roads, Internal Revenue, Taxation,d Foreign Affairs, and Ways and Means. Gregory died in 1971.

 The Noble Jones Gregory papers (dated 1884-1979; 42.4 cubic feet; 79 boxes, 1 folder) consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, legislative files, photographs, and scrapbooks documenting Noble Jones Gregory's career as the 1st district U.S. Congressman from Kentucky. The papers contain correspondence with constituents and publications concerning general legislation (agriculture, Robinson-Patman Bill, social security, taxation, etc.) and Gregory sponsored public (H.R. 5599) and private bills (Juliette Watson bill). There are also folders on topics of special interest to Gregory's district such as sewer plant aid in Paducah. The following are congressmen and other significant Kentuckians who corresponded with Gregory on the topics in parenthesis: Harry Byrd, Willard S. Curtin (Hospitals), Mark Ethridge, John E. Fogerty (Hospitals), Orin Harris (Natural Gas), Wilbur D. Mills (Taxation), William H. Natcher (Budget), and Melvin Price.

The correspondence documents communications between Gregory, family members, friends, and casual greetings from Gregory's political contemporaries.  The diaries contain writings and observations chiefly from Gregory's daughter Marion Hale Gregory (Petitt), Gregory's wife Marion Sr., and Gregory's mother-in-law Mrs. W.L. Hale.  Researchers may find the extensive and detailed letters from Gregory to his daughter from Washington, D.C. during his tenure on the Ways and Means Committee of particular interest, as well as official White House correspondence and invitations for various Washington functions from the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson administrations. Most of the scrapbooks were compiled and constructed by Gregory's daughter Marion Hale Gregory (Pettit), although a few of scrapbooks belonged to either Gregory's wife Marion Hale Gregory Sr., or Gregory's mother-in-law Mrs. W.L. Hale.  The scrapbooks contain a wide variety of emphemera, including notes, letters, drawings, photos, poems, autographs, travel momentos, maps, matchbooks, menus, napkins, and the like. Of interest to some researchers might be scrapbooks from both Marion Hale Gregory Sr. and her daughter that detail campus life during their college days at Sweet Briar College in the early 20th century.  Note:  some loose items from the scrapbooks have been rehoused and sleeved due to preservation concerns.  The original scrapbook location of these items have been documented.
