Noble Gregory was born in Mayfield, Ky. in 1897. He graduated from Mayfield Business College and went to work in the First national Bank of Mayfield, serving as a bookkeeper, cashier, and trust officer from 1917 to 1936. He was elected secretary-treasurer of the Mayfield Board of Education in 1923 and continued in that post until 1936. He also managed his brother Voris' campaigns for Congress from 1926 to 1936. Voris had succeeded Alben Barkley as First District Congressman when the future Vice-President had won election to the Senate. When Voris died suddenly during a campaign in 1936, Noble was chosen to run in his brother's stead. Noble was elected, serving the district until 1958. During his tenure in the House, Noble served on the committees for Post Offices and Post Roads, Internal Revenue, Taxation, and Foreign Affairs, as well as the Ways and Means Committee. These papers contain the office files on legislation for Noble Gregory, 1st district U.S. Congressman from Kentucky. The papers contain correspondence with constituents and publications concerning general legislation (agriculture, Robinson-Patman Bill, social security, taxation, etc.), and Gregory sponsored public (H.R. 5599) and private bills (Juliette Watson bill).
