UK Wildcat Football Notes
The Wildcat Spring Football Brochure is scheduled to come off the press about mid-March. Persons on the "Cat Scratches" mailing list will be sent a copy. These Cat Scratches mailings are a revitalization of the old Wildcat Newsletters, which were discontinued after the NCAA ruled they could not be sent to high school prospects.
George Adams, home from a fine rookie season with the Giants, said he and the coaching staff get along fine and the future looks bright. When head coach Bill Parcells asked George how he would feel about shitting to fullback next season, the former UK great replied that he would play anywhere.
The University of Kentucky's annual spring Football Clinic, scheduled April 18-19. will feature as guest high school lecturers Jack Morris "Mayfield Defense,"; and Pat Gates "Crittenden County Offense."
Those two high school coaches will share the Saturday morning session with Wildcat strength coach Pat Etcheberry. who will kick off that second day's session at 8 a.m.
Popular "on-the-field" demonstrations will be held at 10:15 and an intrasquad scrimmage session at II a.m. at Commonwealth Stadium will climax the clinic.
Coach Claiborne "Spread Punt Protection" will kick off the Friday night session, followed by assistant coaches Jerry Eisaman "Quarterback Fundamentals for Dropback Passing Game," Terry Strock "Under Coverage by LBs," Greg Nord "Short Yardage Offense." Rod Sharpless "Stunting Package." Jake Hallum "Offensive Line Blocking Schemes and Techniques." and Dave Likins "Defensive Ends' Skills and Drills."
Registration is scheduled for Friday at Shively Sports Center, which will feature "Athletic Training and Workshop" and a Wildcat practice session.
As is his custom this time of year. Coach Claiborne spent several days in mid-February meeting varsity players in one-on-one sessions in his office.
He took time off Friday afternoon. Feb. 14, to accompany some Wildcat players to the Veterans Administration Hospital, a traditional Valentine's Day affair for Claiborne.

The Kentucky-Olc Miss game will be played at 1:30 p.m. October 11 in Jackson. There had been an earlier indication from Rebel officials that the game would be played in Oxford.
The Wildcats' homecoming game will be UK vs. Southern Mississippi at 7:30 p.m. on October 4.
In a recent story on its 1986 grid schedule, Southern Miss points out that in its first and only meeting with UK, the Wildcats won 71-7 at Lexington in 1949. The Golden Eagles start out tough, opening with Northeast Louisiana, which has had a good team for years, and then take on Alabama, Mississippi State and Texas A & M before meeting the Wildcats.
The UK Pro Connection
Speaking of the pros, the University of Kentucky had 11 players in the National Football League during the 1985 season. They were:
George Adams, Giants; Jerry Blanton, Chiefs; Warren Bryant, Raiders; Will Grant, Bills; John Grimsley, Oilers; Jim Kovach, '49ers; Joe Phillips, Redskins; Derrick Ramsey, Patriots; Art Still, Chiefs; Jeff Van Note, Falcons and Earl Wilson, Chargers.
At the beginning of the season, UK tied for 39th place (with Boston College, Georgia, Mississippi State, Oregon and TCU) for the number of players (10) on opening day rosters. Joe "Joker" Phillips was called up late by
Washington and earned specialty team "Player of the Week" for a game.
The SID office can account for 74 former UK players who saw combat in the NFL, along with several who played in Canada, the USFL. World Football League, Continental Football League, etc.
Twelve Wildcats were first round draft choices: Bob Gain, Green Bay, 1951; Babe Parilli, Green Bay, 1952; Steve Melinger, Redskins, 1954; Irv Goode, Cards, 1962; Tom Hutchinson, Cleveland, 1963; Sam Ball, Baltimore. 1966; Rick Norton, Miami, 1966; Rodger Bird. Oakland, 1966; Warren Bryant, Falcons, 1976; Randy Burke, Baltimore, 1977;
Art Still, Chiefs, 1978; George Adams. Giants, 1985.
Another interesting note: Former UK assistant coaches in the pros last season: Head coaches Leeman Bennett. Tampa Bay; Chuck Knox, Seattle; Don Shula. Miami. Assistants Dan Sekanovich. Atlanta; George Sefcik, Cincinnati; Larry Seiple and Doug Shively, Tampa Bay (Seiple played but didn't coach at UK); Alex Gibbs and Nick Nicolau, Denver; John Devlin, Houston (to Temple this year); George Catavolos. Indianapolis: Ray Callahan, Jets; Denny Fitzgerald, Ron Blackledge and Hal Hunter, Pittsburgh; Ralph Hawkins, Seattle.
