NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE LIBRARY ECONOMY
Among the massive cuts in spending going on all over campus the Green Bean barely
escaped with its life. Only one formal issue will be printed each month (probably
the last Friday in the month, accompanied by a truncated Wax Bean); an informal
number will be issued irregularly the rest of the month depending on urgent news
and/or interest. The number of copies being printed has been drastically reduced
(one department now receiving twenty copies will receive three in the future). We
will all have to depend on circulating departmental copies. An editorial copy will
be available for Xeroxing (at the individua1's expense) for those who maintain
their own file.
HANDPRESS PRINTING WORKSHOP AT THE KING LIBRARY PRESS
The King Library Press will sponosor its 1980 Handpress Printing Workshop over four
weekends, beginning October ll-12 and ending November 1-2. Saturday sessions will
be from 9:00-12:00 and 2:00-5:00; Sunday sessions will be from 1:00-5:00. (Partici-
pants are invited to work at the Press on Sunday mornings if they so desire). Those
enrolled will produce a keepsake of the event, a personal project and a quarto
publication. There will be a $25.00 fee for the Workshop, and participation is
limited. Anyone interested should see or call Gay Reading, Director of the King
Library Press, 258-8611.
ALUMNI DAY
The College of Library Science, UK, is sponsoring the first annual alumni day,

Center Library, is on the Planning Committee. A fee of $15.00 will include a buffet
luncheon. For additional information contact Nancy Little, 258-8877.

Dorsey, Kathy Hayden, Sherry Huber, Melanie Palaisa, Ginny Bostock and Brenda Lewis.
Thanks also to Larry Greenwood and Nancy Baker for recommending these people.

LSO TOUR OF HISTORIC LEXINGTON
For those of you who did not get a chance to take the Lexington
tour in May and for those of you who would just like to do it, the LSO
is sponsoring a tour of Historic Lexington on Sunday, October 12th.
Tentative plans are to begin about 2:30 p.m. and run to about h:3O p.m.
Mr. Dick DeCamp has agreed to take 2O people on the tour free of charge.
Because space is limited we will sign people up on a first come first
serve basis. We will accept 2N people (20 in the group and four
alternates). Since we may have to turn people away, please do not sign
up unless you are reasonably sure you can come. If you have to change
your plans please let me know as soon as possible so we can fill your
space. Please return the form printed at the end of the WAX BEAN by
September l9th and I will confirm your reservation. Some of you have
indicated to me that you are interested but I must ask that you sign up
again. Come on and enjoy the sites of Historic Lexington but get your
reservation in early so you're ensured a spot in the group. The tour is
open to staff members and their families. Registration deadline is
SEPTEMBER 19TH.

LSO DISHES
It has come to my attention that the LSO owns some very valuable ,
dishes. we are considering disposing of these dishes so I would
appreciate it if some of your senior LSO members could fill me in on the
history of the dishes. we would like to sell the set so if there is
some reason why we should not I would appreciate it if you would let us
know. Also we need a volunteer to help us with the sale as none of us
(the officers) know anything about antique dishes. ln the meantime we
are removing the dishes to a safer place. Please contact Toni Powell,
Andrea Bryant, Betsy Peters, or Sandra Muenks if you have some
information about the dishes or if you can help us with the sale of
them.
LSO SUPPLIES
There seems to be some confusion about the supplies in the LSO
cabinet in the staff lounge. The LSO keeps a stock of napkins, paper
cups, and paper plates for LSO functions. Since we run on a tight
budget and members of the Social Committee spend their free time and
gasoline to keep the cabinet stocked, we must keep these supplies
strictly for LSO functions. We are happy to make available the
non-disposable items; all we ask is that you return them where you found

them, clean and ready for the next event. We are also happy to help out
in a pinch with the paper products but arrangements will have to be made
to replace them as soon as possible. If you have any questions about
this policy or need to use some of the items in the cabinet, contact any
of the LSO Officers.“ Sandra Muenks in the Catalog Department has a key
to the cabinet.
LSO LUNCH HOUR PROGRAM
The August LSO lunch hour program was another hit. Sue Burrier of
Nutrition and Food Science talked on stretching your food dollar. Sue ·
handed out a U.S. Department of Agriculture publication entitled FOOD
FOR THE FAMILY - A COST SAVING PLAN and those who attended found it very
useful. Once again, thanks to Jean Robinson for arranging another fine
program.
