             Biographical note 
             The Kinkead family papers prominently feature George Kinkead and his father William Bury Kinkead, both of whom were Lexington attorneys. George Kinkead graduated from Princeton University in 1870 and after further study in his father's law office, was admitted to the bar in 1872. He practiced law to the time of his death in 1940. Other family members included Eleanor Talbot Kinkead, the novelist, and Elizabeth Shelby Kinkead, a local historian. 
         
         
             Scope and Contents note 
             The Kinkead family papers consist of diaries, account books, correspondence, and other papers that belonged to the Kinkead family of Lexington, Kentucky. The account books detail the family businesses, including a restaurant and bar, while the diaries were kept by William Kinkead in the late 1880s and the 1890s. The collection also contains his personal, legal, and business correspondence and documents. A folder relating to his tenure as a trustee of the State College (now the University of Kentucky), includes letters from James K. Patterson and W.C.P. Breckinridge. 
             In addition, the collection contains a Fayette County Court record book for the years 1869 to 1884, receipts for taxes paid on property the Kinkead family owned in Wisconsin, and George Kinkead's business and legal papers. A folder labeled 
                 John Brownlow land correspondence  records an investigation of land titles for property on the Ohio River, 20 miles below Big Bone.
