REFERENCE; The following item came from the Reference Department of MIK:
—“_—"wImhave asked L,C. and all other possible sources. Can you tell me
where to find a Shelbyville, Kentucky newspaper for l866-l972?" “I need
a biographical sketch of Augustus Heinze." "What is a college rolling
admission plan?" "What are the Taga proceedings, and where may they he
borrowed?"
Each day and night, from students, faculty and co—workers, the Reference
Staff receives a wide spectrum of inquiries, in person, on the phone, and
through the mail. During fiscal l972/73 recorded statistics of questions
asked at the Reference Desk totaled 58,928; mail questions, usually requiring
several hours of research, 361; inquiries by telephone, sometimes ready
reference, often search, 7,496. With four staff members working nights and
week~ends, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the fifth busily supervising the
ever—increasing volume of interlibrary loans, the Department is always
actively seeking the elusive answer. With the hope that some day a full—time
librarian will be available for orientation and formal instruction, our—
rently only the surface of this reference function is being touched. Flans
are underway to try to expand last year’s orientation and bibliographic
discussions with A7 groups of graduates, undergraduates and faculty newcomers

Libraries that have used this arrangement have found it easier for everyone t
use. Tentatively this project is scheduled for the Christmas holidays. we
hope that this will be something in which staff members from other depart—
