MERION HASKINS, 6-4, 205 Senior Forward Campbellsville, Ky. (5/13/55)
The ultimate honor in any sport is to be selected to Captain's status and that is why Merion Haskins' Co-Captaincy is uniquenot a full time starter or top scorer, not the best defensive player but his full value to the team concept is as great as if he topped those three categories . . . Recruited As Back, Siganos Still Loves Offense
Mike Siganos has proven himself to be a very talented young man for the Peach Bowl-bound Kentucky Wildcats. Siganos was highly recruited as a running back out of Norwalk, Conn., but he's never played a down at running back for Kentucky.
Instead, Siganos was given the responsibility of playing defensive back at Lexinton and that's where he'll be when Kentucky meets North Carolina in the Ninth Annual Peach Bowl.
Siganos is also the leading pass interceptor on the squad as he's stolen eight over the past three seasons and still has a year of eligibility remaining for the Wildcats.
"I guess I'm just a frustrated running back still," says Siganos, "I still wish I could play running back."
Head Coach Fran Curci does allow the young defensive back an opportunity to handle the ball though. Mike, in addition to his other duties, is also the Wildcats' punt-returner. He's taken 40 punts this year and returned them for a total of 216 yards with a long run of 19 yards against rival Tennessee.
Siganos is also the fourth-leading tackier on the Kentucky team with 50 solo tackles and 14 assists.
But Siganos' talents don't stop there. Mike is a talented painter, and does impressionistic work as well as portraits.
"I do some oils, but I mainly like to draw or paint weird things. They're kind of hard to explain without showing them to someone."
"I guess my favorite is one with me in a mountain, but again you would have to see it to understand it," he says.
Siganos is talented, but he's never had an art showing yet. "When I was small, about 10 years old, I used to sell my drawings and paintings around the neighborhood for $10 or something like that, but I haven't really had time to do much with it in the last year or so. I've really been busy with football and school.
Even though Siganos' forte seems to be covering the opposition's passing attack, he doesn't feel he'll have the opportunity against North Carolina.
"North Carolina really hasn't passed that much this year, but they really
don't need to pass with the running game they have. I don't expect to see many passes in the Peach Bowl," said Mike.
So Siganos will be at defensive back
against North Carolina and he has one more year to go in Wildcat land. "I would still like to be playing running back," he says.
Congratulations
