We Had Warned Players Just Two Days Earlier
Question - How much will the NCAA probation in the form of cutbacks in scholarships hurt the basketball program here at Kentucky?
Coach Hall We can live with it. We usually don't use all our scholarships and il shouldn't seriously handicap our recruiting.
Question - What about the NCAA findings. What's your overall thoughts on the report, as far as basketball is concerned?
Coach Hall- I don't have any comment on it right now.
Question - Would you discuss some of the incidents which allegedly occurred in connection with your basketball program.
Coach hall- I don't have any comment on that either.
Question - Both you and assistant Dick Parsons were in Louisville last week for the big high school doubleh-eader classic. Did anything in the tourney impress you? And what about Ballard's Jeff Lamp, who is supposed to be one of the best high school players in the country this season?
Coach Hall- It was a very interesting event for the fans in the area. They brought in four of the best high school teams in the country, including one from the maryland area and one from Chicago. The Maryland club had a great team with a traditional program and was very impressive. Bowling Green was without its center and was at a big disadvantage but still played well and has good potential. Ballard was an exceptionally strong club and impressive in its two-point win over East Chicago. Lamp is a great athlete and was the game's top scorer with 30 points. He has an awful lot of ability and should be a great college player.
Question - You have just re-instated three basketball players who were suspended for curfew violations. Do you have a set standard and penalty for such violations?
Coach Hall- The fact that we pointedly warned the players the penalty would be severe resulted in the two-game suspension. We had warned the players about curfew just two days before the incident. We don't check on the players every night but they know when they are supposed to be in. They are to be in by 12 midnight. Sometimes we check at midnight and sometimes even later. Like last night, we checked around 1:15 a.m.
Question - Many college coaches think there will never be another undefeated major college basketball team because of the tough schedules and improved basketball teams around the country. You have just lost one on your home floor after many felt
Kentucky might have an outside chance of going undefeated. Do you agree with the coaches who think the undefeated teams are a thing of the past?
Coach Hall: No, I don't. There are still some great clubs and there will be ones in the future. Indiana proved it last year. That sounds like the man who wanted to close the patent office because he argued everything had already been invented.
Question - You're getting ready for Notre Dame, a club which is ranked number two in the nation but the Irish have lost guard Ray Martin for the
season with a fractured ankle. How does Martin's loss affect the Irish?
Coach Hall- I think his loss will only affect Notre Dame in depth at the guard position. It cuts their back-up strength but both freshman Rich Branning and junior Don Williams score better than Martin. Of course Martin was a senior and had experience over the other two. But their greatest loss will be depth-wise.
Question - It's near conference time and Kentucky will enter the SEC race with either a 7-1 or 6-2 record [depending on the outcome of the Notre Dame game] and the preparat-

7e &iU' IPoum,
ion portion of the season is over. How do you look back over the non-conference schedule? Has the team progressed the way you had hoped for?
Coach Hall- They had until the UKIT and then they recreased in those two games. We should have played much better ball than we did against Bowling Green and Utah. Even without the three players, I thought we would give a better effort than we did. I just don't know how we stand at this point after the poor showing in the tournament. Our other players just didn't perform the way they're capable of and that upsets me.
Question - You have seven plavers shooting better than fifty percent from the field. Can they maintain this type of shooting throughout the season?
Coach Hall- Yes,, they're all fifty-percent shooters and they can shoot that way for a season. "What bothers us is the way some of the others are shooting. The others, who have pulled our team percentage down, are capable of doing mueh better. We're looking forward to when the others come along,
Question You've said all teason thai you're not alarmed at Kentucky'! poor free threw shooting statistics-. After seven games, do you still feet confident the Wildcats will find the mark from the charity strip?
Coach Hall The free throws will come along, We're not alarmed at all about free throws, We praetiee them every day and we'll do all right in that department, We're confident f that,
Question Did the exam schedule have anything to do with Kentucky's play in the UKIT, The team was just coming off exams that week, weren't they?
Coach Hall Yes, we were coming off exams and we played against Bowling Green like we had been in exams all week and had been up studying until 2 a.m. or S a,m, in the morning, But we played -hi poorly I can't contribute it t that alone, We just didn't play good basketball,
Question In the past, you have always had a public practice In Freedom Hall on the morning of the Notre Dame game. Will you have one thi* year,
('.mi I. I bill Yes, we will pi ai tii g || Freedom Hall at 10 a,m, n Thursday rooming, We won't he working n a lot, but we will be taking seme shooting praetiee and ther things, The public is eertainiy wtkemed to come and watch, We think this is an opportunity for many youngsters and fans to see the Wildcats who are not fortunate enough to obtain tickets to the games there in Louisville,
