' The Inventory of Federal Archives in the States is one of the products
_1 of the work of the Survey of Federal Archives, which operated as a nation-
wide project of the`Works Progress Administration fran January l, 1956 to
i, June 50, 1957, and has been continued since that date as a unit of the
E, Historical Records Survey, also operating as a nation-wide project of the
., Works Progress Administration, and a group of state or local projects of
if that Administration and of the Work Projects Administration.
ii The plan for the organization of the Inventory is as follows: Series
§* I consists of reports on the administration of the Survey, acknowledge-
Qi ments, and general discussions of the location, condition, and content of
§E Federal archives in the states. Succeeding series contain the detailed
lj information secured by workers of the Survey, in inventory form, a sepa-
QQ rate series number being assigned to each of the executive departments
if (except the Department of State) and other major units of the Federal
Q Government. Within each series No. 1 is a general introduction to the
if field organization and records of the governmental agency concerned; the
ji succeeding numbers contain the inventory proper, separate numbers being
gi assigned to each state in alphabetical order. Thus, in each series, the
p, inventory for Alabama is No. 2, that for Arizona No. 5, that for Arkansas
ty No. 4, etc.
tj For each local office information regarding each series, or unit of
Q} related records, is presented in the following order; title, inclusive
tf dates ("to date" indicating an open file at the time the information was
E, secured), general description of informational content, description of
`§ the system of filing or indexing (if any), a statement of frequency and
gl purpose of use, form of the record itself (bound volumes, sheets in fold-
%` ers, etc.), linear footage, description of the containers, physical con-
Qi dition of the records {not stated if satisfactory), location by room
SY number or other identifying information, and finally, the number of the
§ Form 58SA on which this information was originally recorded by a Survey
I; worker and from which it was abstracted for the Inventory. This form is
E; on file in The National Archives. When it contains substantial informa-
g tion on addenda sheets which has not been included in the mimeographed
_; abstract, indication of this is given by use of the reference "See
QQ addenda.“
if In Georgia the work of the Survey was under the direction of Profes-
l, sor Merritt B. Pound from its inception until June 50, 1957. Since that
_Q ttne the Historical Records Survey in Georgia, now sponsored by the Uni-
ii versity of Georgia, has continued work on the Inventory of Federal Arch-
*; ives. This Inventory of the records of The Department of The Interior
Q} in Georgia was prepared in the Atlanta office of the Survey and was edi-
Q; ted before final typing by Kenneth hunden, Junior Archives Assistant,
j` The National Archives. It is reproduced in mimeographed form through the
{ facilities of the Historical Records Survey.
