Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Larkspur Press is a small letterpress publisher based in Monterey, Kentucky founded in 1974 by Gray Zeitz (b. 1949 or 1950), a University of Kentucky alum who worked at the King Library Press in the basement of the Margaret I. King Library as a student. Zeitz was producing a literary magazine called Handsel when he was introduced to Carolyn Reading Hammer (1911-2001), the Director of the King Library Press as well as the Rare Books Curator at the University of Kentucky Libraries. Hammer took Zeitz on as an apprentice, and later gifted him a drawer of type and a press when he moved to Monterey. Soon after founding the press, Bluegrass, a book of poetry by Richard Taylor, was published in 1975.
The Larkspur Press regularly publishes three books per year and broadsides as well, mainly by Kentucky writers. The press has remained committed to keeping their books affordable over the years, printing a regular edition of each book on machine-made paper and a special edition on handmade paper and hand bound, usually with decorated papers over boards. Multiple Kentucky-based bookstores and customers have a standing order with the press for each book that is published.

Scope and Content
The Larkspur Press Broadside Collection (dated 1992-2019, undated; 1.16 cubic feet; 2 boxes) comprises an artificial collection gathered by the Special Collections Research Center consisting of poetry broadsides published by the Larkspur Press, a letter press based in Monterey, Kentucky. A broadside is a sheet of paper printed on one side. Authors of note include Wendell Berry, James Baker Hall, Silas House, George Ella Lyon, James H. Mulligan, and Richard Taylor. These broadsides are letterpress prints of poems, quotes, and excerpts from books and stories, some accompanied by imagery such as wood engravings, many by Joanne Price and Wesley Bates. Most of the broadsides are of work from Kentucky authors about the natural world.
