- Biography / History
- Julianna Roosevelt (b. 1952) was born in New York, New York to Curtis Roosevelt (1930-2016) and Robin H. Edwards (b. 1929). She is the great-granddaughter of Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1977, she married Stephen M. Hargrove, however they divorced in 1978. She married a second time in 1980 to Irving M. Bass. No other biographical information available.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Julianna Roosevelt letters (dated 1936, 1968-1977, undated; 0.69 cubic feet; 2 boxes, 13 items) comprise letters, clippings, applications, and photographs that document the life of Julianna Roosevelt living in California during the flower power movement. The letters are sent from family, friends, and boyfriends. Letters from family discuss daily life, moving, life advice, finances, and new families. Letters from boyfriends discuss relationship troubles, private school activities, applying and attending college, gossip, spending time with friends, academic achievements, their feelings for Julianna, travel, and employment. Letters from friends discuss school, gossip, relationships, finding employment, travel, spending time with family and friends, and invitations to spend time with Julianna. The papers include clippings of Julianna's marriage announcement and the achievements of a cousin, Julianna's college application, and a savings account book. The photographs depict a wedding and spending time with family and friends.
- The Julianna Roosevelt letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
