Scope and Content
The Arthur W. Janowitz scrapbooks (dated 1909-1916; 0.20 cubic feet; 1 box) comprises two scrapbooks that document the travels taken by Arthur Janowitz in the United States and Canada in 1909 and 1916. In 1909, Janowitz travels to New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania with his electrical engineering classmates to visit numerous power and manufacturing plants. He details his companions and their chaperone, catching the train to each location, antics they got up to in the hotels they stayed in, running into girls on the trip, plants they toured, alumni and family members they visited, sightseeing, attempts to visit with their senator and President Taft, having to change plans on the fly, and discussions on the work completed at the plants they visited. Janowitz includes numerous photographs of their trip in the book as well, describing what is being shown and who might be in the picture. Among the plants visited include: Acheson Oildag Company, Niagara Falls Power Company, International Paper Company, Cataract Power and Conduit Company, General Electric Company, American Locomotive Company, Potomac Power Company, and National Tube Company.
In 1916, Janowitz travels to Canada with his friend Bob Fitzsimmons, and in this book he details their train ride north to Toronto and Muskoka, their accommodations, making friends on the trip, sightseeing around Toronto, taking various steamboat trips in the lakes around Muskoka, going on a twenty-three mile rowboat trip, participating in baseball games, tennis and lawn bowls matches; touring the Canadian National Exhibition, and their return trip home. Alongside the narrative of the trip are photographs taken by both men.
The Arthur W. Janowitz scrapbooks collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
