Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Ervin Chester (E.C.) Perkins (1893-1971) was born in Ostrander, Ohio in 1893 to David T. Perkins and Malissa G. Rittenhouse. He married Nadeen Archer on March 2, 1918 in Louisville, Kentucky. He served as a United States Army officer during World War I, and after the war he returned to become a coal mine superintendent in Harlan, Kentucky. By 1940, he became a market analyst and General Chairman of Arrangements for Appalachian Coals, Incorporated, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. Beginning in 1941 he served as the manager of the Marketing Division of Appalachian Coals, Incorporated, and later became the Manager of Sales for the company. He died in December 1971 at the age of 78 and is buried in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky.

- The Ervin C. Perkins scrapbook (dated 1941-1950, undated; 0.69 cubic feet; 2 boxes, 1 item) comprises unbound materials that document Perkins' clippings in the coal magazine, The Black Diamond, conference memorabilia, details for the Leatherwood Country coal operation project, various newspaper clippings, reports, speeches/ addresses, writings, and photographs, as well as a separate item - a scrapbook - which includes many of the same materials previously described. These materials primarily deal with Perkins' experiences as a sales and marketing manager for Appalachian Coals, Incorporated, a coal company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, during the 1940s.
