NEW LABELS FOR MEDICATED FEEDS EFFECTIVE JANUARY l, 19%
After many lengthy discussions between representatives of the Food and
Drug Administration, American Feed Manufacturers Association and the Associ-
ation of American Feed Control Officials, a uniform, simplified system of labeling
feeds containing drugs has been developed. Two new types of labels are provided
for. .
The first is for use of feed containing drugs for growth promotion and/or
disease prevention., and to be fed continuously as the sole ration. It features
prominence of the name of the feed with subordinate classification of the term
"medicated". This heading must be followed by a statement of purpose of the med-
ication, a reference to directions for use, and declaration of name and percentage
of active drug ingredients. The remainder of the label is devoted to labeling infor-
mation following the C¤Sf0f¤31'Y procedure. The following sample tags should be
followed in labeling feeds of this type.

The proposed changes apply to feeds that are to be fed continuously for
growth promoting and disease preventing purposes and the "treatment feeds". N0
change is indicated in feeds which contain (1) hormone or hormone-like substances
(diethylstilbestrol, for example); (2) preparations that are ordinarily considered a
"single dosage treatment" such as wormers; and (3) premixes of antibiotics, coc-
cidiostats, hormone, etc. , which are sold to feed manufacturers by drug manu-
facturers for the former's use in the mixing of feeds.
