- Biography / History
- Barnstable Colony was one of the earliest British colonies in North America. Located on Cape Cod, it was settled in 1638 by the Reverend Joseph Hull, and declared the county seat in 1635.
- Scope and Content
- The Barnstable Colony legal papers (dated 1734-1741, 1884; 0.01 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise three legal documents concerning debt and property from the Barnstable Colony in Massachusetts that date from 1734 to 1741; the collection also contains a single National Democratic Convention ticket from 1884. The legal documents are printed papers with spaces for handwriting with the particulars of each case. The earliest document concerns the estate of Cornelious Ellis, whose name appears as Ellice on the document. Research of Barnstable residents at the time uncovered a Cornelious Ellis but no one named Ellice, so it could be a misspelling. The two remaining documents are substantively similar but are different printings for the Inferior Court of Common Pleas Holden at Barnstable. They are both judgements regarding debt owed to another. These documents have been folded and there is writing on the verso. All three documents are affixed with red wax seals in the upper left that have the letter B surrounded by vines. The singular National Democratic Convention ticket is a paper ticket for section J at the convention held in Chicago on July 8, 1884.
