 Seal Portland Lodge No. 34
of the Order.

KINGHTS OF THE ROYAL ARCH.

Louis Dammasch,Recorder
416 McKay Building.

If The Knights of the Royal Arch is a

benevolent and fraternal order, whose

object is the betterment and protect-

iOn of the liquor business. No person Portland,0regon,Jan.8,1906.
is eligible for membership unless he ‘ »

is engaged in or connected with the

brewing,liquor or cigar trade.

EAH SIR:

The Portland Lodge of the Knights of the Royal Arch is con—
sidering a proposition to employ a firm of attorneys to represent
the retail dealers of the city by the year.

It looks as though the retail liquor dealers of ?ortland
will have to take an active part in many political matters during
the next six months. Candidates for various public offices are
already seeking the support and good will of the saloon men, stat—
ing that they believe the saloon men have been too much persecuted
and overtaxed recently. .

Then we must remember that woman suffrage is to be voted
on next June, also an amendment to the present unfair local option
law. Sunday closing is another matter which we shortly will have to
deal'with, and an effort will shortly be made, we understand to
once more raise the license.

Because of all these things the Knights of the Royal Arch
hate elected a new set of officers for the coming year who will take
an active part in protecting. the trade. hill you help?

These officers will be installed at the next meeting of the
lodge, Wednesday evening, January 10, at 8 o'clock, K of P Hall,
Marquam building. The lodge instructed me at the last meeting to
inVite a selected number of representative liquor dealers to attend
this meeting in addition to the regular members.

host of the troubles which the liquor men have to contend
with could be avoided if they would get together oftener to talk
things over.

You ere, therefore, earnestly requested to accept this invita—
tidn and attend this meeting, 7hether you are a aember of the anights,
of the Royal Arch or not. The installation of officers will as geublio;
and in View of the present political situation, every liquor man should
make it a point to leave his business for two hours on Wednesday
evening and help to do something: for t1 1e betterment of tile trade..

Our enemies never sleep. Let us wake up.x

Yours resvectfully,
LOUIS DAMMASCH5.Recorder.

709 TRUST CO. BUILDING.

LEXWGTON,KY, May 21, 1906.

Déév¢é4bt#V%uxé Ué%5;2"L/Qzéé—

Kiss Laura Clay,
Lock Box 590,
Portland, Oregon,
My dear Miss Clay;

I am very much gratified to be able to tell you I
have succeeded in getting a judgment in your favor in your contest
with the heirs of Mrs. Bruce. There has been turned over to me in
money $1900. The property derised to you by Miss Laura Bruce was ap-
praised under an order of the court, by empreisers appointed by the
court, at $5100. This Will, as you will remember, was drawn by Miss
Bruce herself, and the trust attempted to be created by her is rather
crudely done from a legal stand point.

There were in your case two or three dangerous features which
seems to have been overlooked by the other attorneys, but which are
out of the way, by reason of the fact the court decided in our favor.
This trust is a personal one in you,, and if any thing should occur
by which you would cease to act as trustee, either by death or resig-
nation, there would be some question as to the rights, of the trustee,
it being a personal trust. For that reason it is my opinion it would be
better for you, as soon as you can give the matter your attention, to
sell the real estate here and convert it into cash. I presume the ap—
praisement which was made by Mr. H. W. Bain, Mr. Joe. Woolfodk, end

Mr. Bishop Clay, all real estate agents, was about correct. If any

thing it may be worth a little more now than it was at that time.
You have never formerly qualified as trustee. Do you exPect to

be in Kentucky in the near future?
