Senator Martin Bailey has introduced in the Illinois Senate,
,Senate Bill, No. 37, which has been referred to Elections Committee of which
Senator Breidt is chairman.

Hon. Richard T. Hagan, in the House, has introduced House
Bill, No. 35, which was referred to Committee of the Whole.

Both these bills provide for giving women the right to vote for
candidates at Primary Elections, and at Elections held under the Commission
Form of Municipal Government. This might bring municipal woman suffrage
to many cities outside of Chicago, and while not as valuable as the larger
municipal suffrage bill before the regular session in 1909,it is about all that
women can ash for, under the terms of the Governor's call for this session.

The friends of the cause are requested to write their members in
the Legislature urging an affirmative vote on the suffrage bills. Most4
of the members are looking forward to a renomination, and they may have
awakening conscience concerning justice to women.

A hearing before the committee will prokshiy occur Tuesday,

Feb. 1, 3 p. m,, at Springfield.

In the States of Washington, Oregon, South Dakota, and Oklahoma
women suffrage constitutional amendments are to be submitted this year
to the people with great prospect of success.

If Illinois does not want to lag too far in the rear it should
begin enfranchising Illinois women. ,‘V

ANNA E. BLOUNT,
Acting President.
CATHARINE W. McCULLOCH,
Legislative Superintendent.

My Boar Miss Clays;

I know you will nardon my long delay in answering your kind
and welcome letter which came before Kmas. Kiss oregg was awav on an
organizing tripyand returned only a few days ago .She left fOr Phoenix.
this morning where Mrs;o'fieill and others have promised to do all in
their power to help her.I have never seen Vrs.O'Heill so inclined to
Workk Hr,0'fieill told me a few days ago that he exoected to run for
senator from.Arizona§and I think the thousand members which Miss Gregg
has alreadv secured with onlv a partial canvass of four counties looks
good to Eugene radvtéfi/ J?”

3155 oregg came to us last fall and I have never ceased to congratulate
myself on the good fortune that sent her,I know that it was due_to your".
efforts that the National sent her to us,and I don't know how to expregf
mv thanks;I have never seen her eoual for endurance and anthursiasm.!bu
couldn’t have found anyone better suited to the work in Arizona, and no
one Could make a better impression than she does.3he wins friends for ”TVL'
canse everv where she goes.fihe has made her home with me when she has
been in.Presoott, and I find her perfectly delightful.0h Miss Olav I

can’t tell you how much I thank you for having Miss Gregg sent to us

and how much x appreciate what the national is doing for us. I reallv ber'
believe we are going to win.floua1 Suffrage in Arizona.It has come to UK;

as from two or three different directions that the Democratic Partv

 U
[Eyfl-5":3:3|\“7/O-~

intends to put it to their platform. If they do I believe we can once

the Republican party to do the same {and then we can feel aSSured of
its adoption in the Constitution, We are going right on.with the organ—
ization work and without relaxing our vigilance one momentiand I feel
assured we can show a large membership by the time the election is
held even though it comes as soon as a month or two.

It looks at this time as though there will not be another legislature
under territorial government, and even if thenashould be I think Gov.
Sloan will be favorable to our Eillfas he passed fovorably on the con.
stitutionality of the act while he was on the sunreme bench of the ter
ritorV. If the National will just let us have Miss Gregg until the
question is decided,I feel sure of success.

The Anti—Saloon League is making things lively here in Arizona for the
saloon element.I feel glad of it for one thing. The galoon people will
find less time to géght us with the other fight on their hands,

We are just organizing our press work and I am now sending out letters
to all the editors in the territory calling their attention to the
fact that the question is a vital one and asking them how much infor—

mation on the subject they would like to have each week;and I intend

to keeé>every one who wants anything well sufiplied.I am taking the aflk\

titude with them that I am conferring a raver by offering it to them.
now Miss Glay I will write to you from time to time unless press of tfi\

for us.
