EVaneton, Aug. 36, 311.

My dear flies Eshley:

Your letter of August 21st to the Board is received.
You are right in your contention that ‘ies Clay is under no oblige-
tion to pay the “lOO.GO on account of the lease. It "as only pron—
ised to make up the deficit and there will be no oeficit. The t1400.00
again promied by lies Thomas in her huguet 10th letter is sure. The
5500 from fire. Belmont is probably sure and the rent from the New York
Association will more than make up the ”$5.30 per month hiss Clay Wished
to cover. It was just like ties Slay, however, to vigorously protest
against on ection she deened extravagant and then when the vote was
against her to leyslly try to pay the bill. However, as iee Clay
now knows all the facts, she probably intvnds to contribute the $100.00
to the cause and I would keep it.

From your letter edflreeeed to me personally, i on oled
to receive the information wsked of Piss thaw we to what was "a most
important errand" which must be attendei to before Convention by rise.

Gruening and “iss Fleming.

A copy of my letter to 'iee Show was sent to oil Board
members and ’iee Blackwell, flies Clay, Tise Gordon and :"re. Etewart
state that they received no such letter and knew nothing about it.

Of course the Treasurer's work is in your hands but you
generally consult the Hoard, senetimes as to frequent appeals in Journal
and quite recently as to your excellent letter comparing our inCome
with that of one of the English societies. ??ece, however, were in
line with our approved methods. This r plan of tending out solici-
tors is e ."b it would have beer wiser to have
consulted the Board. We have en. wroloyed any euch oolicitors, nor
sent any one specially for monev. to must except flies Gordon and fire.
Avery, who, though not treasurers, were a ocielly authorized to solicit
suffrage money. They were so well known among suffregists that it
seems very different from asking too young college girls who are not
known. ' .

These Board members who were not informed of your plans
happen also to be state leaders of some prominence and if you send
persons into their states, it would be courteous to have notified the
State Presiflents. The htate President could tell whether the time
was new propitious in her Btote.

Illinois Was plunged into a 35Q0.00 debt by our June and
July auto tours in southern Illinois.

California wants our Helen Todd to speak, we to pey her
expenses. To raiee these two amounts will keep Illinois busy, es-
pecially as we have spent on our State work already this year about
L
WBOQQ.GO

Mrs. Brcwn, the President of Wisconsin innocently re—
joiced that the Rational was eending her twe workers and is correspond-
ingly depressed when she learns that they only wish "te ccnfer with
various active woeen in regard to t e possibilities of cooperation in
our Wetionel work". when the women arrive and a1- learns that they

are collecting meney out of a campaign state for matienel work, she will
probably feel even more depressed. ’

I think you ehould have asked the ceneent of the heard
before sending out such eolicitore. ?he is paying the expenses end
salaries of these young women ?

Tag I bring up another matter now about which I hesitate
te ask mgain and yet we ought to know the fecte ? Hey ve not have u
treasurer'e etetenent, such as you ymve us February fiflth ? If we knew
What wee in the various funds and vh J iebte we owe, We shall be better

T

informed for our coming heard meeting.
Yeure truly,

Catherine Teugh I Culloch.

LONDON - PARIS- NEW YORK

Dear Madam:

This Magazine wants to give adequate editorial notice
to the good work done by the General Federation 0! Women’s Clubs
in securing better laws-for the protection of women.

You, personally, can help us in doing this by letting
us know the latest facts with regard to the situation in your
own state.

We reach many thousands of women who do NOT belong
to women’s clubs and they, as well as the women who DO belong,
ought to have a greater knowledge and a greater appreciatiOn
of the work which is being done on their behalf.

It has come to our attention that the General Federa-
tion of Women's Clubs is planning to undertake a compilation of
the iawa relating to women in the various states of this Union.
It is in connection with this enterprise that we are now addreee—
ing you. A3 chairman of legislation for your state you are in a
position to know what demand there is in your state for new and
better laws governing woman’s control of her life, in the family
and in industry.

The question which in particular we wish to ask you
is this:

"At wiut points, in your Opinion, do the women of
your state most want to see the laws regarding women amended
and strengthened!”

If the women in your state are not joint guardians
