May 4th, 1907»
My deer dies Gordon,

’ I returned on Monday from Richmond, where I had
been for more than a month. I found yrur letter of.flarch 50th, which by
some accident hed not‘been forwarded to me. An s. I answer it now.
Headquarters at Va.E_position. Perhaps you noticed in hiss Shaw's an-
nouncement of the vote that I had voted exactly as you did; for I be-

lieved you had a better understanding about that than I had. Now after

your letter I am particularly glad I did. I think the race question

,may be made a power in the enfranchise“ment of women. Something may be-

done in Ky., but the negro question is not as acute in this state as

in those h ere there ate more of {hemr It may interest.you to know that
the infant *rS.of tonnessee has_hed printed at its own expense 1000 of
the Statements of Purpose of the Hemphis Conference, of which I sent you
a coyy.So you see they realize the imyortance of that argument.
LIBRARITS. I think you are right about waiting for Mrs. Boyer to fin-
ish that work at some future time.

And now to Mrs.Duniway's preposition. I received your special deliv-
ery letter and sent it at once to Kiss Blackwell. That same day I received
Miss Shaw's enclosing the Oregon propositi n. I enclose you a copy of my
answer;fiend if you like, please send it to Mrs.Kelly, with such comments‘
as you wish to add . My heart is fully set on carrying on the Oregon
campaign. ID would be an acknowledgment 0!! a complete rout by the 3.0.
if we allow no canpaign to come off in 1908, or if we have no hand in one

which the Oregon pe0;1e carry on. I agree with you that a very effective

one may he carried on by letter writing, eto., particularly after the
thorough educational one of last year. Moreover, in View of the exceeding
difficulty of working at a distance end of the expense of such a campaign
as we are now obliged to conduct in Oklahoma, I think $2000 is very cheap
