Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Gray family of Piqua, Ohio consisted of grandparents Arthur Sutherland gray (1872-1946) and Minna Maude Craig (1979-1952), parents Catharine Louise Gray (1902-1981) and Edward Harrison Ross (1900-1984) and their daughter Lucinda Lee Ross (1935-2014). Catharine and Edward wed on November 8th, 1930 in Oberlin, Ohio. The couple only had one child, Lucinda Lee Ross.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Catharine Gray letters (dated 1920-1936; 0.02 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise letters and newspaper clippings that document the lives of Catharine Gray and her father, Arthur Gray, during the first half of the twentieth century in Ohio. This collection includes correspondence from father to daughter during Catharine's time at Oberlin College, her trip to Europe, and her marriage to Edward Harrison Ross. The letters discuss daily life, health of family members and wishes of safe travels for Catherine throughout her time in Paris, France and Glasgow, Scotland. Other letters in the collection include some sent to Catharine following her marriage to Harrison Ross and the birth of their first child, Lucinda Lee Ross.
- The Catharine Gray letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
