Lumbermen's Credit Association
608 South Dearborn Street
Chicago. Illinois
Gentlemen:
v Your file CGS.MW.

Your letter of January 26 making inquiry as to the
Capital Lumber Company is received and noted.

The people behind this business came to Prestonsburg
some several months ago. They came to our bank (The Bank
Josephine) to open an account with certified checks, and
were insulted because we did not permit them to draw against
the checks until they were collected. However. the first
checks came through, then other checks they gave us were
returned "nsf". Thereupon therextablished credit relations
with our neighbor bank, which finally filed suit against
them on collections, but the claims were paid off before
judgment was taken, and the principle man with this organization
claims to be a Russian Jew, but has lately left Prestonsburg,
and rumor has it. that he has been arrested by the F.B.I.
people, growing out of a recent pipe line explosion. and
some of the people confessed to planting the dynamite and
implicated this man. Some how or other I doubt it. It is
further said that there are several suits filed or to be
filed against them for breach of contract.

The principle man behind this company went under the name
of Harry Malkin while here. I would advise much more extended
investigation before extending any credit to these people.

Very truly yours,
Joseph D. Harkins

Dear Jack:

It has been sometime since I have written to you
and talked to you about the status of the "Ammunition
Storage Base" proposed to be constructed at Richmond,
Kentucky. From time to time, I notice articles in the
paper relative to securing the needed land for purpose
of constructing this base. I will appreciate it very
much if you will trace this matter, and advise me as to y
the present status, and what you may be able to advise
is the present view of the Var Department as to the
awarding of this contract.

I have been holding court here since the 11th on
account of the physical inability of Henry to preside,
and will be holding the court to and including the 28th
of this month. Henry tells me that they have found that
his blood tressure was down to eighty which, of course,
is dangerously low. but I think he is and will continue
to imgrove, from and after the end of this month be able
to continue holding his court and in good line, and I
certainly hope so.

Ur. Prichard died Saturday afternoon, and the funeral
is Tuesday afternoon. I don't know of any special news of
interest to tell you at this time.

All good wishes to each of the family and all of the
office corps. '

Very truly yours,
Joseph D. Harkins

Mr. Harry Kindt

Superintendent C. & 0. Railway
Ashland. Kentucky

Dear Kr. hindt:

On Sunday, April 3, 1942. my sister, Mrs. Iley B.
Browning of Ashland Avenue. Ashland. Kentucky, Phone
Number 2306, and fire. C. H. Tyler. Lexington, Kentucky,
Grand matron of the Eastern Star of Kentucky, were
passengers on Train 38 from Louisa to Pikeville. hrs.

Tyler then being on an inspection trip of the different
Eastern Star Chapters in Eastern Kentucky. They had several
pieces of baggage, but wanted them immediately available

on their arrival at Pikeville and, therefore. did not check
any of the baggage.

Mrs. Browning informs me that they were each treated
very discourteous by the Conductor and Brakeman in the car
which they were passengers; that they had difficulty in
finding any place to place the baggage to the satisfaction
of one or the other of the train employees. That shortly
before reaching Fikeville she requested of the Conductor
that he or the Brakeman aid them in getting their baggage
off of the train; that the Conductor entirely ignored their
request and without comment; that the Brakeman not only
ignored their request but very discourteously informed them
that there was a baggage car for baggage, and that if women
traveling on the train did not use the baggage car for their
baggage they need not expect him to help them in any way.
About the time the train stopped at Pikeville one of Mrs.
Browning's acquaintances appeared in the car, and it was only
through his co-operation and courtesy that they were able
to get their baggage off the train.

On yesterday afternoon Ere. Browning was a passenger on
Train 39 from Prestonsburg to Ashland, and I have pleasure
in saying that the Conductor was extraordinary courteous to
her in regard to herself and baggage when she was getting on
the train, and so entirely different from the Conductor on
the other train mentioned.

Mr. Harry Kindt Page 2. gay 11' 1942
While I am writing you in this connection. I beg to
advise that I had had in mind making complaint at other times
as to the lack.of consideration of courtesy from some of your
Conductors and Brakemen on some of your passenger trains. My
1‘.other is approaching eighty-three years of age. On different
occasions she is a passenger on the train between Prestonsburg
and Ashland in one or the other directions. and on several

occasions when she was a passenger, the Brakeman has refused

' to put down the portable step so as to aid her in getting on
and off the train. I cannot give you at this time the dates
or the trains, but merely feel that calling your attention to
this matter will result in instructions being given to the
effect that the step should be put out when there is an elderly
person getting in or off the train.

If you desire further details as to the discourtesy as to
your Conductor and Brakeman to Mrs. Browning and Mrs. Tyler,
you can call hrs. Browning at her home in Ashland, Phone 2306.

My best personal wishes.

Very truly yours.

TO THE CITIZENS OF THE SEVENTRnggflggggnggAh_letgyyy

My attention has just been called to a poster
being circulated by Dr. Elmer E. Gabbard, Republican
candidate for congress in the Seventh Congressional District,
maligning the good name of my deceased husband, Hon. John W.
Langley.

The statement is as follows;

"THE SEVENTH Kentucky District some—
times goes Democratic, sometines Republican.
Flddlin' John Langley, Republican, once
represented it-—a different kind of a
Republican from Elmer E. Gabbard."

It grieves me to think that a Republican candidate
for congress would seek to discredit the good name of my
deceased husband, especially when he is not here to defend
himself. The Hon. John W. Langley and myself represented this
Congressional District from Kentucky for practically a quarter
of a century. We gave the best that was in us to its upbuilding
and served it faithfully, as the length of time that we were kept
in congress would indicate. The statement being circulated by
Dr. Gabbard goes straight to my heart and stigmatizes his many
relatives and thousands of friends when he so loyally served,
when applied to his statesmanship and the loyal service rendered

 p U 4 ‘

to the constituents of this District.
I must, in fairness to his memory, to myself,

my children and relatives believe that his thousands of
friends will resent this reflection. I regret this reflection
has been made at this time, impelling me to sxgress my resent-
ment.

Faithfully yours
