OFFICE: DAY AND NIGH‘T BANK BUILDING
F’ 0. BOX 346
HUNTINGTON. w. VA.. June, 4th, 1917.
Mr. Walter S. Harkins,
Prestonsburg, Ky.
Dear Sir;-
Your proposal on the PRATER CREEK, ARKANSAS, AND BULL CREEK,
coal acreage was received by Dr. H. D. Hatfield, Huntington,
W.Va. and same was turned over to me, in order to give you a
reply on the said property.
Mr. A. J. Dalton and myself went over the list of acres, but
you did not inclose the blue print which I sent you, to mark
off in RED INK and outline the boundry so that we could ascertain
Just about where your property line run, when bordering on the
other creeks, this is very important and must have same by return
mail.
Mr. Dalton advises that he would like to know if you could secure
the right from, or purchase, the timber on this property up to
and including sixteen (16") inches in diameter, which is for all
mining purposes, This will have to be done because there is
no mine that can be operated without timber, Also he stated that
this was a very rare case in the purchase of coal land, in not
having the timber included with the purchase of the coal. The
parties living on, and owning this timber would get balky, and
probably would not sell the company timber for its mining purposes
which would be very inconvenient to any operator.
Kindly address all commucations to me regarding this sale to
Mr. A. J. Dalton, Mr. Jno. A. Kelly, and Dr.H. D. Hatfield, and
associates, because they are listining to me in this proposition
and expect me to get everything in shape.
Trusting that you will give this you immediate attention, and that
I will receive your reply at an early date, I am,
Yours very truly ' 1:/;>T::>

Dear Sir:
" Replying to your letter of May 31, will say that '
we are not interested in a coal property which is undeveloPed,
but have been looking only for developed and going mines
which will produce a known and constant tonnage.
We have recently taken OVer a mine on the C & 0 in
West Virginia, which we believe will anSWer all our requirements.
If, however, a moderate sized mine with a present
production of 1500 to 3000 tons per month comes to your notice,
I will be glad if you will write me at the Hotel Frederick,
Huntington, giving me all the details, so that I can present
it to our people here if it appears at alldesirable.
Truly yours,

Dear Hr. Harkins-

Miss Mary Louise Speed, on.
of our delightful young ladies. and a favorite
of Mrs. Dunlep's,wishes to come on my recom-
mendation to Prestonsburg with a party of
several,probab1y five or six people, to spend
as much as three or four weeks in Prostonsburg.

They want to go into the noun-
tains, and I have suggested Prestonsburg as
a place where they could probably find pretty
good hotel accommodations, and also find
beautiful scenery.

She is going to write you on
the subject, mainly I think along the line of
some place to stop in your city. Anything you
can do for her and her party I secure you I
will deem it a personal favor.

With best regards, I am

I feel that these three subjects properly
handled for five minutes might be the method whereby we
could create a stimulus thro gh the visiting bankers to
help push tLese matters when they present themselves in
their communities as it looks now that they are bound to
0" me.
We will have Boy Scouts and business
representatives to meet each train and care for the visitors.
I have been to many of these meetings and I realize that it
is discouraging to a local orginizetion should they mike
preparations and the attendance not be as expected. You see
it is our endeavor in Ashlsnd to do our part and I trust
that you with the Chairman of the districts will use every
' effort to make this a memorable and instructive nesting.
That is, set some good out of it.
As to Hotel, We have the venture, and
the "cede and will be able to care for them allw without
any inconvenience. I have arranged a reservation for you
at the Venture. Now get busy and issue any instructions
you wish to me for this meeting.
Very Respectfully,
