in answer to your letter will say that ny wife does not ca‘e
to lease her oil and ens other than the pronosition that was rafic
when you was here. hoveloncmcnt is what she fishes and does not care
to lease just a portion as your list contract seemed that you wouhl
want to take a part if you so desired. We do not wish to lease our
undivided interest until we have it lail off and given us.

Initial Railroad Weights to Govern Settlements. Contracts and Orders Contingent Upon Conditions Beyond Our Control.
All Coal Bills Due on Receipt of Invoice.
Dear Col.Harkins:-

For several months I have been corresponding
with the Treasurer of a very large Trust Company in England and
in my last letter from him he advises that his company owns Natural
Resources in Spatn,Portugal,Holland,Switzerland,France,etc; and
Just now they have funds for investment in Natural Resources in
countries outside of Europe.

These peepleITrust 00;) handle large sums of
money for investment and they are now in the mark 1: for a large
boundry of m1nera1,preferably coal, lands and they have asked me
to submit something good at once.

I am very busy Just now with some oil and gas
drilling arrangements,as well as with a coal property, and I wonder-
ed if you had something to offer in your own properties or some
property of others who may want to sell at this time.

In submitting a property to my correspondent in
England it will be necessary to describe it,stating number of acres,
location in the State, kind of mineral and timber, get some reputable
Engineer's report on it-as to quantity, values and accessability and
the price. Also,it will be necessary to have an option properly ex-
ecuted by the owners for a sufficient length of time for the report
to go to England by mail and time for their Engineer's report to be
made and sent to them and,of course, the matter of title will require
some time for inspection before they can take definite action in
closing a deal.

If yOu have anything;or know of anythinngor such
a buyer I shall be glad to have you submit it at once and have it
cent across to England for immediate consideration. '

Yours very truly,

ELKHORN COAL
STEAM---GAS—--BY-PRODUCT
MARYTOWN. WEST VA.. Jan . 25, 19 22.
Walter S.Harkins,Jr.,
Prestonsburg, Ky.,
Dear Sir:-

Your esteemed favor of the 19th. at hand. helative to the
sec0nd paragraph of the same 1 would say,as 1 said with reference to
former communications from you, that the sub-leasing any portion of our
lease or pr0perty is absolutely out of the question. We may consider
a sale of our entire holdings, but no part thereof.

We have a preperty, which in normal times,we would consider
worth at least $100,000.00,and even in these times we wmmfifififithink that
the stockholders would value at something like $80,000.00. Now prepar-
ing an invoice with copy of lease, maps etc. is as you know not an insig-
nificant task. Fowever,if you are really desirOus of obtaining the
pronerty and have more than merely a speculative interest in the same
and feel that the last named figure would be within the limits of your
estimate of the property,we will be glad to proceed with this task.

We t‘en COuld possibly secure for you a 50 or 60 day Option, but no
option would be granted so near Apr.lst.without a substantial payment
for same, which in event of purchase would be applied to payment on the
purchase price of the property.

hindly let me hear frow you by return wall as to your
attitude in the matter.
Very Truly yours, 3
