Collection Overview

Biography / History
Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice (1870-1942), a native of Louisville, was a Kentucky author and the wife of the poet Cale Young Rice. She received a degree from the University of Louisville and authored numerous books, including three penned in collaboration with her husband. Rice is best known for her novel Mrs. Wiggs and the Cabbage Patch, which depicts life in Louisville's lower class Cabbage District.

The Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice letters (dated 1925-1929; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 folder) contain letters from Alice Hegan Rice to a friend she refers to as Mr. Adcock. The letters discuss her work and her travels. Included is a letter of introduction for an artist named Vivian Hewerdine.
