Collection Overview

Biography / History
Charles L. Waldack (1829-1882) immigrated to the United States from Belgium in 1857. He operated a photography studio in Cincinnati from 1857 to 1873. Waldack wrote about his experiences, observations, and techniques used in the expedition in the Philadelphia Photographer. Writer Horace C. Hovey honored Waldack by naming Waldack Dome in Mammoth Cave after the photographer.
He married Kentucky born photographer, Mary Tanner Waldack (b. 1847) between 1870 and 1880. Mary took over Charles' studio in Cincinnati in 1881 after he left on an extended visit to Belgium, where he died in 1882. Mary Tanner Waldack owned and operated the studio until at least 1893.
