Collection Overview

Biography / History
Thomas O. Turner, a merchant, began in business in 1895 at Cerulean Springs, Kentucky and later served as state senator from the third district of Kentucky (1928-1938). During the term of Governor Flem D. Sampson (1927-1931), Turner participated in the legislation for free text books. In the Ruby Laffoon administration (1934-1935) he led the fight against the sales tax. Turner was active in philanthropic and church affairs and retired from active business in 1947.

The Thomas O. Turner papers (dated 1875-1953; 6.4 cubic feet; 16 boxes) include correspondence, ledgers, invoices, and inventories that document Turner's legislative career and business affairs. Included in the correspondence are letters from William Breckenridge Ardery, John D. Carroll, Albert B. Chandler, William Jason Fields, Seldon Robert Glenn, William Voris Gregory, Elwood Hamilton, Ollie M. James, David E. Lilienthal, Marvel Mills Logan, Thomas Rust Underwood, A. O. Stanley, Simeon Willis, Bailey P. Wootton, and Allie W. Young. Bound volumes in the collection include bill registers, cash books, daybooks, invoice books, journals, ledgers, and records of farm produce, livestock sales, the Adams Grocery Company, the Cerulean Springs Hotel, and Garland-Tom Motor Company (Cadiz, Ky.).
