- Mine inspector and U.S. Navy yeoman, Taylor Vinson Johns (1890-1958) was born in Louisa, Ky. He was the cousin of Frederick Moore Vinson, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1946 to 1953. Johns served in the navy from 1908-1914, including on the Armored Cruiser NORTH CAROLINA. He mustered out of service as a Chief Petty Officer, the youngest in the navy at the time of his appointment. Following his time in the navy, he worked for the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior until 1955. Additionally, Johns was appointed as a Kentucky Colonel by Earle C. Clements in 1939. He married Anna Ruth Peters on February 15, 1915; they had one daughter, Beatrice Winder Johns.

- The Taylor Vinson Johns papers (dated 1914-1958; .18 cubic feet; 1 slim box) primarily contains correspondence between Taylor Vinson Johns and first cousin Frederick Moore Vinson. Correspondence includes references to and a souvenir program for Vinson Day in Louisa, Kentucky, on July 11, 1951. Also includes materials documenting Johns' appointment as a Kentucky Colonel in the Governor's Office; photographs, clippings, and other letters addressed to or compiled by Johns and relating to Roberta Vinson (Frederick Vinson's wife) and Lou Vinson (Frederick Vinson's daughter); and Johns' train ticket, Aug. 25, 1914, to Louisa, Ky.
