- Editor, Journalist, Newspaper reporter. Henry Watterson was the only son of Harvey Watterson, a U.S. Congressman from Tennessee. During his career, Henry Watterson wrote for such publications as HARPER'S WEEKLY, the NEW YORK TIMES, and the NEW YORK TRIBUNE. After serving in the Confederate army during the Civil War, he re-established the REPUBLICAN BANNER newspaper of Nashville before becoming managing editor of the Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL in 1868. For fifty years he retained this position and was the most influential and respected newspaper man of his time, taking strong positions devoted to Jeffersonian philosophy. In 1918 he retired to private life.
- Scope and Content
- These materials consist of autograph letters and editorials by Henry Watterson, along with various newspaper articles. The letters are from Watterson to Henry Wilder Allen (1VF64M199), Gen. Brice (1VF67M93), Augustus Thomas (1VF56M119), and the English publisher, Alexander Macmillan (1VF71M4). Watterson sent also Macmillan a copy of the REPUBLICAN BANNER. Several editorials by Watterson which appeared in the COURIER-JOURNAL are included (1VF59M17), one of which is a manuscript copy of a comment about the Democratic National Convention in 1912 (1VF63M199). Newspaper articles on Kentucky history are also contained in the papers, as are obituaries and a memorial pamphlet written on the death of Watterson (1VF63M199).
