Scope and Content
The Ellsworth Hobbs letters (dated 1925; 0.01 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises love-letters sent to Ellsworth Hobbs as he worked in a general store in Mattawamkeag, Maine in 1925. Ellsworth Hobbs received multiple love letters from a young woman named Althea Fae Smith. She writes to him about working in a general store, stocking shelves, reading books, helping customers, and frequently tells him how much she loves him. One letter included in this collection discusses some trouble the couple is going through, and a local minster offers to help Althea take the issue to court.
The Ellsworth Hobbs letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
