- Biography / History
- William Campbell Preston Breckinridge, a son of Robert Jefferson Breckinridge, studied law in Louisville, Ky. and opened his practice in Lexington in 1857. During the Civil War, he fought under John Hunt Morgan in the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry and the 9th Kentucky Cavalry. After the war, he edited the Lexington Observer and Reporter from 1866 to 1868. He served in Congress as a Democratic representative from 1884 to 1894, suffering a bitter reelection defeat after ten years of representing central Kentucky. In 1897, he became the chief editorial writer for the Lexington Morning Herald managed by his son, Desha Breckinridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Breckinridge family scrapbook (dated 1904-1922; 0.25 cubic feet; 1 item) contains newspaper clippings of obituaries, telegrams, and letters of sympathy written upon the death of William C.P. Breckinridge. Included with the scrapbook is a letter dated 1922 from Desha Breckinridge to Judge James H. Hazelrigg concerning the scrapbook and the achievements of John Breckinridge.
