- Biography / History
- Verlinda Risk Sidener (1832-1858) was married to husband Jacob Sidener, Jr. (1824-1891) on March 22, 1853. They had two children: John William Sidener (1845-1855) and Jacob L. Sidener (1856-1890). Reverend Jacob Sidener, Jr., a teacher and farmer, owned a farm called Uniondale in Northern Fayette County, Kentucky. The surrounding community was also known as Loradale. In the 1880s, Jacob Sidener's son James Sidener sold Uniondale in parcels to free slaves, creating Jimtown.
- The parents of Verlinda Risk Sidner, Joseph Risk (1797-1879) and Sally Huls Risk (1805-1870), lived in Kiddville, Clark County, Kentucky. They had four daughters including Verlinda: Susan, Rachel, and Louisa.
- Scope and Content
- The Sidener family papers (dated 1849-1959, bulk 1853-1859; 0.1 cubic feet; 55 items) consist of correspondence, a diary, and a mimeographed history of the Sugar Ridge Presbyterian Church, which document the Sidener family of Loradale, Kentucky. Verlinda Risk Sidener and her husband Jacob Sidener, Jr. wrote the bulk of the correspondence to her parents, Joseph Risk and Sally Huls Risk. They write of their family, their farm Uniondale, their slaves, Jacob Sidener's school, church, and illnesses and disease. Conditions specifically mentioned in the letters include cholera, flux, mumps, smallpox, and tumors. Additionally, the letters include descriptions of death and grief. The Sidener's were part of the Old Union Church (Disciples of Christ) in Uniondale. The letters describe in detail the family's religious experiences and often mention an "Old Brother Smith", possibly "Raccoon John" Smith. The rest of the correspondence consists mainly of letters written to the Risks from siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. The diary of Verlinda Sidener (1853-1855) records family events and her religious thoughts. A typescript of the will of William Risk (1774-1854) and some genealogical materials are also included.
